What was the best retro Star Wars game and why was it Dark Forces?

replaying this now, the puzzle-like level design keeps it feeling fun in ways that modern FPS games rarely do (and certainly not to the same extent).

>>5129135
I never made it past the sewer level in Dark Forces. The constantly respawning tentacle monsters frustrated the shit out of me. Also the fact that the game has "lives" makes me uncertain if I should actually use those lives or just quick save / load like every other FPS ever.

The maps were mostly all different in terms of looks and they felt like real places in their layout. Having a mission objective was nice too, even if some amounted to just "fetch X then return to drop zone."
Also those concussion rifle guys on Hard difficulty are the worst. Even the Dark Troopers are less bullshit than them.

FPBP. DF2/MotS was miles above any other retro SW game. DF2 was more well-known (and had way more mods/levels) but MotS was comfy as fuck and had my favorite levels.
>fucking up imperials on the asteroid

Fuck, bros. I miss these games so much but I can't get them to run worth a shit on modern PCs. Wish they had a source port so I could play these again.

Despite adding jumping, ducking, throwable grenades and levels with layers on top of each other, which doom couldn’t do.

I also forgot the objective based mission structure of doom, along with extensive cutscenes and voiceover. Totally a doom thing.

Dark Forces was awesome because it was the first time that you could honestly claim to shoot stormtroopers "for real." To be honest, though, the engine really held it back; It was back in the pre-Quake era where it didn't have honest "room-over-room" polygon tech.

Admittedly, the story was a bit meh ("Dark Trooper"... Seriously, which 15 year old did they get to write THAT?) and it also reflected the "every level is completely different than the previous one" aesthetic that FPS games had at the time (The ice level! The sewer level! The space base level!).

I was really looking forward to the JK2 mod conversion of DF that, sadly, never came to be. That would've been fun.

Thanks for an honest reply, some other guy just said that there aren't respawning enemies.

Probably true, but those tentacle beasts in the sewers sure feel like they're respawning and it really stresses me out.

I'm actually stuck in my Dark Forces 2 playthrough for a similar reason, there's a canyon level with bunkers you can't enter, and I swear the stormtroopers coming from them are infinitely respawning.

Dude I'm not that guy but chill the fuck out. It's cool that the Mac version has double the resolution but it would have been far cooler if it was scalable.
As it is, it's still a terrific port, but Mac wasn't really the best place for synthesized music, and it happens to sound much less convincing than the FM option which at least had three times the available channels. Also, while the resolution is greater, the system can't do anything to correct the aspect ratio, which is a little squished.

That port is around the same level as the average Blood port that is not GDX. Bugs galore, non-working music and braindead enemies. It's very sad most people on YouTube had to subject themselves to that shit just because they could get them modern controls and gfx. IMO the original software rendering has far more atmosphere, even moreso than Doom.

XWA was mildly disappointing. Maybe it was just that I was bored of the combat sim style, but after the wow factor of all the different ships it just wasn't as fun to play for some reason.
