another glorified gambling machine bites the dust. based lads.

remember: the only real value a game has lies in the experience of playing it. fetishising "authentic" corporeal objects is for collectorfags who don't actually play. as long as the actual software persists, it doesn't matter what happens to the individual machines.

Wanting to own a cabinet is not inherently a bad thing. You're a faggot. No opinion has to be on one extreme end or another.

>>5127796
what you have to understand is that just like burning money, doing this does nothing but hurt the owner. anyone who wants to play Tempest can still do so via the numerous ports or even an emulator, and anyone who already has a Tempest cabinet just had theirs increase in value by a little bit.

I see it as a matter of history. It's a historical artifact and it's better such a thing is preserved rather than actively destroyed.

Destroy them all. Most of you children on here never played them when they were relevant anyway and you never will. Pathetically trying to recreate some era of gaming that you'll never know so just get over it and go play your emulators.

Partially agree. While the survival of the software is ultimately the most important part sometimes the physical aspect can be part of the experience. Maybe not in the case of Tempest because its just a regular cabinet but sometimes cabs have peripherals, lights, or other things you cant get through MAME.

Tempest is a sweet shaped cabinet but replacing a vector monitor is a bitch, probably not worth the trouble and doing a raster conversion is sacrilege so it's probably best it met a spectacular end. Maybe with a PStv in it that has TxK now that I think of it

Is there a source for new xy monitors? If feel terrible cannibalizing a Sega/Gremlin for a Tempest. Destroying the truly rare to preserve the iconic is an easy sin to commit thinking you're doing good. Yes. In fact I thought I attached a picture of a Tempest Mame conversion, I'll attach it now. After I thought about it though I do think that it might be in acceptable taste to leave the spinner panel intact and use a small plasma and a PStv primarily for the spiritual modern successor to Tempest, TxK a game so good and so much like Tempest by Tempest's original designer that Atari successfully blocked its wider release. It could also run tempest through emulation.

To the best of my knowledge, it was added back to PSN store and Tempest 4000 is based off it. So it appears Atari and that lama fucking hippie came to terms. Shame they couldn't have come to terms before Space Giraffe came into existence, cause it fucking sucked.

Well you said replacing vector monitors is a bitch and since the process is nearly identical to replacing any any other CRT that means it's too much for you to handle. The LCDs in your MAME cabs are apparently light enough for you to cope with. Finding vector monitors in good condition is hard. Fortunately nearly every CRT works the same way and doesn't care whether the circuit driving it makes the beam go back and fort and down and up or whether it's driven in another pattern.

>> No.5131762

>>5128113
>Maybe not in the case of Tempest because its just a regular cabinet
The spinner and display are not exactly regular. Sure you can get spinners for PCs although they're not common peripherals, but that vector display is not something a modern TV or monitor replicates very well.

That video's by TNT Amusements >>5128591 who have been in the arcade and pinball business since the 80s (ie back when it was still relevant). Say what you will about Todd, the dude's a fucking savant when it comes to this stuff, and if you've seen his videos (especially the ones where he goes through the warehouse), it's clear his business is packed with spare machines and parts. He wouldn't destroy something unless it had no value to him and he just wanted it gone. From the looks of it you're more than welcome to travel to Philly and take those parts off his hands.

Something else to keep in mind, those clips are 13 years old and the pinball machine was rotted and soaked in cat piss.
