It's been "possible" since the home computer came into existence.

Nintendo was still selling the famicom/NES for a while after the SNES released, including games. Marketing didn't work the same back then. People still didn't give very many shits about home consoles back then.

Why do you think the American SNES looks like a bad piece of stereo equipment? They just didn't know what the hell they were doing back then or what the consumer really wanted.

eh, sort of. The 65816 boots into 6502 compatibility mode by default and you have to switch it in your code. But the PPU doesn't respond to NES code and the sound architecture is completely different. TBH I don't think anything apart from the CPU is capable of running NES code.
