"Pretty cool" is an apt description. One of my favorite games ever is a FE game but just like other game in the series there are significant flaws that blemish the experience. Unfortunately there's no one FE game that gets everything right.

Overall it's probably my second favorite trpg series, after Langrisser.

I've only experienced the not-/vr/ Wars games (like Advance Wars and later) but I'm interested in trying out both the Famicom and the Super Famicom games even if I can't read japanese. Am I missing out or could I just play it without reading dialogues or following the story? I didn't have much trouble playing the first two FE games that way.

there's a recent translation patch for Super Famicom Wars now, it's very fun in my opinion.
There's no story as such, just a bunch of maps to play through. That may or may not be a negative for you but I don't feel like the story in advance wars was really necessary. At the very least it's worth having a look at.

It can be achieved without the jealously system, just not at that point; if seliph waits beside julia while she is an enemy in the final chapter they get the +5 and don't get any penalty (ordinarily there's a +5 for being together and a -5 every turn). So basically you just have to keep them together for the whole game.

It's particularly a shame in FE since I feel like they were building towards something great but then decided to take several steps back. In more recent times FE Conquest had some really good elements while being held back by writing so we'll see if they decide to abandon the good parts once again.
