Just beat pic related for the first time. I'm not a big jrpg fan but the stunning visuals and pacing kept me going and I loved it.

Why did no future jrpgs learn from this game and integrate its innovations (e.g. characters level up even if not in party)

Neat, just beat this for the first time myself like two weeks ago. Fantastic game, loved it.

There are other rpgs that do that OP, some Final Fantasies and Mario RPG for example.

What I wish more games had copied is the interaction between map placement and enemy battles instead of just random encounters.

Nah fuck that, if they weren't around for the combat they shouldn't get the experience. When players don't show up to my D&D sessions it's the same thing. If they can't make it, they'll fall behind in power.

That doesn't even make sense from a realistic standpoint. How can you gain experience when you're not involved in an activity?

How does fighting in battle and acquiring a certain set amount of numerical values until you obtain enough to become better at something, maybe not even the thing you are training in, make sense at all in a realistic stand point? There is no set amount of experience for someone to gain proficiency, but more of an estimated one.

How about we just chalk this up to it's a fucking video game.

>They achieve this pallet shift effect in a gif with individual frames of animation?

It's a 256x224 gif blown up to 800x563 with what looks like bilinear resizing.

If it was original resolution, you could actually bake in the palette shift to the gif, since gifs also use palettes.

Why even bother use any aspect of reality for the game's design at all?

>That doesn't even make sense from a realistic standpoint. How can you gain experience when you're not involved in an activity?

While you are busy in the real world they are off in the End of Time, where the only things to do to pass time is fighting Spekkio or raping the dude standing by the lamp post (Gaspar or whatever is his name). Either would be team-based physical activity that allows them to level up and learn double techs while you are away.

>> No.5115793

>>5115786
Because there would be a part of grounded reality and another part of player convenience. Obviously having characters outside of combat still obtaining some experience would be convenient for players, especially if they ever wished to check out other characters and how they interact in battle with one another. So stop being a chuckle fuck.

>> No.5115795

Characters not in the party might gain experience points, but they do not gain tech points. But if you spread the Nu's and those volcano things that lock your techs around evenly, then its real easy to keep everyone's techs up.

I liked the smooth battle transition. Why don't modern JRPGs try it?

>> No.5116131

>>5116091
Too much work. Not only no battle screen transition, but many of the battles were specially designed sequences. Like on the mountain to get the first part of the Muramasa, you have those ninja enemies throwing rocks at you. Or those sleeping ogres that get woken up by those birds with the bells. And those kinds of battles are all throughout the game, part of what makes Magus' Castle so good.

Shining the Holy Ark does exactly this, in addition to being a much more hardcore exploration and puzzle solving experience. Pacing, however, is not the same as Chrono Trigger, you spend hours in a single dungeon figuring your way through the maze. My favorite RPG ever.
