Why is the hero of gen 1 pokemon "Red" and the rival "Blue"? When playing through blue your (the players) name suggestions include "Blue", yet people now refer to Blue as the rival of gen1.

Is there something that sets them apart - perhaps that gary motherfucker from the anime resembles blue?

Red is canon. Blue is the alternate universe version.

>> No.5113779

You know what's fucked, in the Japanese version Blue is called Green.

So in Blue (game) you arent playing as the rival, you're just in a non-canon universe?

Yeah Gary is actually Green. Blue is the girl, I believe.
I don't think it matters much though, you just get the default name according to the version of the game you get. Who names their sons after colors?

This
>tfw pokeautists take these color names seriously
You're clearly supposed to name these characters something else. Stop being so hopeless.

because charizard is on the cover of red and charizard is the best, therefore red is canon

also, the (((red))) you fight on mt. silver is the MC from Yellow anyway

Those are their canon names.

Thats a good point actually, the creators of gen2 sanctioned/reaffirmed that 'red' is his canon name. This actually makes it more confusing, since its no longer just a PokeAutist theory.

Jack and John are just suggested names. Nothing more. The third options should be Satoshi for Red and Shigeru for Blue.

>> No.5113905

I know that's all they are, it's just they're the least talked about. Red and Blue became the "canon names" for the games, while Ash and Gary are used in the anime. Nothing uses Jack and John though.

I always liked how they used Satoshi and Shigeru as options in the Japanese version. The Pokemon Zensho manga uses those names.

Japanese Red version is different from the international Red version.

In Japan Pokemon Red and Green were released at the same time, Pokemon Blue came later as a special enhanced version with new "improved" sprites. Blue was the localized and made into the international Red and Blue versions

I think the problem stems from Pokemon Trainer Red appearing at the end of the Gen 2 games. You're totally right that you're just supposed to rename the characters and not care, but at the same time Red is actually a canon character who appears to fight you at the end of Gold and Silver.

What I always thought they should have done was have you hook up a link cable at the start of Gold/Silver to transfer your save data from Red/Blue. The game would tell you that it's transferring all your pokemon so they'll be available for you after a certain point in the game from the Pokemon Center computers, but then it would SECRETLY also transfer your character's name and the team you most recently beat the Elite Four with. Then at the end of Gold/Silver you wouldn't face Pokemon Trainer Red with some prefab """canon""" team, you would fight Pokemon Trainer [Your Name] with YOUR TEAM from the first game. It would have been fucking mindblowing and it wouldn't have ever brought up these issues of "canon names" and "canon teams" and all that bullshit.

Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 actually used that idea, if you linked to the first game, any mention of the first game's protag used your name from Black & White 1

A lot of marketing during that era called the characters Satoshi and Shigeru. It wasn't until Gold and Silver were released that "Red" and "Green" became their canon names.
