Anyone on this board interested in sharing about some of your favorite moments or games? Seeing as to old school roguelikes being as retro as it gets, and with me picking up Qud and UnReal World this week, thought I'd ask

On the same note, do you guys count games like Dawrf Fortress/Qud that are more recent (yet purposely built on an outdated but beloved system) retro in spirit or just in style? How about games that came out a long time ago but are still being added on to and developed? Retro or no?

Powder isn't quite retro but is a lot of fun.

Rogue was one of my favorite games when I was young and I eventually went hack and beat it in my 20s then moved onto Nethack and dabbled in a bunch of others over the years. I think when they're good it's one of the best genres there is.

I'd recommend trying these on PC first as it's 100% keyboard based. The mobile versions can be very aggravating to click through all the menus to do a simple action like eat. Aside from that, Nethack is the only oldschool rogue that's mobile-available.

>in spirit or style?
Don't give a fuck if it is in retro spirit or style, if it wasn't released before the cutoff it's still not fucking retro. If it came out back then, and STILL can be ran on old hardware, it's retro even if it's still being developed.

So, Rogue and Nethack and maybe a few others are allowed around here. For the rest, there's a /rlg/ general thread on /vg/. Granted, most of the users are autistic fucks who spend more time arguing over which variant of DCSS is the only acceptable version, but you can still get some decent info out of them. Too bad most of them forgot what having fun means, and will screech endlessly if you do anything that isn't the most optimal build/strategy. Don't mention CDDA, the lack of endgame still makes them angry.

I wasn't asking for board rules, desu, I was asking your opinions/experiences : ) I'm new to roguelikes honestly and forgot all about Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. And with the lack of endgame content comment on CDDA, eh, most open-ended vidya suffers from the same problem. I guess I'm really just trying to get some feedback from people who have dedicated hundreds of hours, being a newfag to this genre

My only high-level ADOM character was a Dwarven Priest who was about to make his ascend into the Tower of Eternal Flames (a successful ascension there pretty much marks the "mid-late" point of the game). Never seen the inside of the ToEF before and prepared for it dilligently with fireproof blankets, rings of ice and whatnot.

I was like 12 years old at the time, to add context. A friend of my older brother shows up and goes like:
>What's that?
>ADOM
>Looks gay
And he turns off the power from my computer.
ADOM didn't do backup saves during that time, so the character was completely gone. Just like that.
To this day, I've never beaten ADOM.
Nowadays, I just play DoomRL every so often, but it's not retro.

Since the boys at /g/ aren't responding, might as well ask it here.

Can anyone help me with installing Cataclysm DDA on Linux? I really want to install it, but it's just not working. Don't even know where I fucked up.

I just started getting into Nethack
Run I just did was really fun
I had low HP in the Gnomish Mines so I had to start zapping niggers with magic missiles
I like how you can identify wands by writing on the floor with them
Then once I got my HP back up I died because I fell on a teleport trap and got sent to a room with like 100 monsters and got gangraped
Any way to detect traps before you step on them?

I like to play as the Barbarian class in Nethack, is it good?

>I like to play as the Barbarian class in Nethack, is it good?
Yes. Valkyrie is the ultimate noob starter, but overall, your learning experience should be the same. Valkyrie gets easy access to Excalibur, as well as Orb of Fate and Mjollnir, while Barb's early items aren't as great; also, Dwarves > Orcs and there are a number of small complications that ultimately make Valkyrie easier to ascend. However, your starter goal anyway should be to "survive a couple hundred turns", and Barbarian does that splendidly. As a newbie, you really can't go wrong with Valk, Samurai, Barb or Wizard (spamming spells is actually really good in roguelikes; it funnels you through the early game handily, and the late game is great. The main problem with Wiz is that their low HP and weak melee capability makes them prone to some unfortunate instadeath incidents. Still, a good beginner character in my opinion.)

I thought reading a scroll of mail didn't break illterate status? Or use a turn, for that matter, it's just an in-game way to open your text based mail client, yeah? Then you're back in the game and no time has elapsed.

Shiren the Wanderer on Snes.

It is balls to the wall hard but not unfair like spelunky, people that say it sucks play it at the pace their ADHD brain can handle and die because they rush everything.

Its a game you must play cautiously and it rewards you for being cautious.
Think you're not gonna make it? You can send your gear back to the hub so at least you only lose levels.

Qud has some old school sensibilities, but it really does come from the modern school of roguelikes even if it isn't to the same extent as something like Brogue or Sil.
DF on the other hand is very old school but also so much it's own thing that there really isn't much to compare it too.
