HL2 killed it i think, so many people were excited to migrate from goldsrc to src, then src modding kind of petered out. I had a play with the source SDK back in the day and from what i remember it really upped the difficulty for modders - eg introducing materials, mapping needed more detail (thus more effort), client modding was a mess and quite painful. To contrast I would venture a guess that doom still has a strong modding scene because it's so easy to mod.

HL2 probably had an effect but there's nothing technically stopping people going back to GoldSrc. I think the thing these days is that there's just nothing you can do with Half-Life that you couldn't just do in Unity for about the same effort. Like the big thing with HL was that it was cinematic, you could make your own little "movie" with a story and set-pieces and everything, but that's not a unique thing anymore.

Maybe if the combat was better, the scripting options just a little bit more advanced, it'd still be considered relevant.

Good point, i agree goldsrc doesnt offer anything unique to modders anymore. If the community had maintained momentum that would be something, but as it stands i agree either a modern engine makes more sense, or if you want a classic (and much easier) modding environment you choose doom (or less often quake.)

I think HL1 hit that sweet spot of being open and advanced enough to really let people's imaginations work, but simple enough that it wasn't too difficult to work with. It helped that it was based on Quake 1, so any experience with Quake 1 or 2, particularly with mapping and the model-making pipeline, was still very useful for HL1 modding. I don't think it's a coincidence that guys that started with Quake 1 modding, like Gooseman and Neil Manke, made their magnum opuses with HL1.

With the advancement of technology, many of HL1's benefits have been poached by Doom and Quake thanks to source ports, so HL1 has much less to offer than it did back in November 1998. And, I think today's modders are generally unwilling to learn how to work with HL1's systems, instead preferring the ultra-simple stuff you see in Doom, and to a lesser extent, Quake.

The level geometry is multi-floored, 4 floors, if I remember correctly, and you are jumping between floors constantly. Walls, if I remember correctly, can only have 8 directions though, like in System Shock 1. Regardless, it's fairly complex layouting-wise, not primitive at all, and it's used in the game quite well.
The artstyle went heavily for the dirty comic look (and not only the artstyle, the whole game is heavily stylized for being comicbook-like), I don't think it's THAT well realized, but it's tolerable, I guess.

>>5114797
They just needed to be reassigned properly.

I used cursor keys for forward/backward/turning (don't know if using numpad is a viable solution, but I'd try to use it for the right hand if I was playing now), and used WASD shifted to some adjacent position (like FXCV or something) for strafes, jumping and ducking, while grouping all the other necessary keys around it and using space for shooting. It worked really well, I didn't have a single inconvenience during playing.

It was more of a case of "HUH? D.W.Bradley doing a DOOM CLONE?! HERESY! WHERE IS MUH WIZARDRY??!".

This game just didn't have a core audience. The Wizardry 6-7 audience utterly despised Doom, while Doom audience just didn't know who the fuck D.W.Bradley was. There was simply no overlap.

It was also, from what I understand pretty heavy on the computer hardware, SVGA, detailed spriting and all. And yes, default controls didn't help either.

It's a genuinely curious, playable and unique game though, it's a real shame it ultimately fell through the cracks.

And yes, claiming it influenced HL1 in any way is wishful thinking at best.

I don't get it either. There's plenty of details for a game developed in 1998 and things to do. Barring the intro and the first part of Residue Processing, enemies are attacking you often and there are tricks and traps to avoid or use to your advantage. Even On A Rail, which should be extremely boring on paper, has plenty of stops and side paths to spice things up, like the guys on the rocket turrets and the completely optional path that leads to the bottom of the rocket launch pad and the broken elevator room that has your first Satchel Charges. Just because there aren't armies of enemies in every room and hallway like in your nostalgia-riddled version of Doom and Quake doesn't mean it's empty.

I think the issue people have is that HL1's linearity focused on gameplay and cool setpieces involving the gameplay. HL2's setpieces and linearity are much more interested in wowing you with impressive landscapes and unusual-looking locations than the gameplay. If you don't like how HL2 looks, then you're going to be in for a rough time with it.

IMO half-life is a good game not because it was the first to do anything in particular, but because it converged multiple genres and most importantly was heavily play-tested. It tied together storytelling, FPS action, and puzzles, but alone that could have sucked. Valve spent ages playtesting and refining it until players seamlessly flowed through 99% of the time without getting 'stuck'. I think this is why, despite being linear, the game doesn't feel restrictive - we're subconsciously led down the right path so consistently that we never hit annoyances or intuitive sections that bring us out of the immersive experience.

I loved a lot of 3d games before half-life, like quake and descent. And i played a lot of story games prior to HL, but HL was the first action game i played where the story drew me in.

This is a good point. HL1 worked because it managed to fuse both Quake (player speed and movement systems) and Duke Nukem 3D (focus on realistic areas and some weapons) in a way that the influences are obvious, but the game still feels like it is its own thing by going beyond them instead of merely copying them. It gave you things to do that were more than "shoot the monster until it dies" and "press the switch" while still being firmly rooted in two proven successful games. Basically, HL1 managed to advance the genre while being planted in solid and proven fundamentals that made the transition from Quake and similar games to Half-Life painless.

I think that quasi-realism like in Duke Nukem 3D and Half-Life is a great way to do an FPS, you can have these partial locales and environments which are detailed and fairly believable, but you then build more abstract elements around it, sci-fi or fantasy theming allowing you to make excuses for less believable environments (to a point).

Like, Half-Life has environments which are completely believable, but it's also loaded with environments and setpieces which, as commonly joked about, are complete and utter OSHA nightmares (pic related being one of my favorites, for how retardedly unsafe and illegal this would be IRL). Likewise for Duke Nukem 3D.
These two games go for realism, for the purpose of detail and immersion, but they never go so hard for realism as to sacrifice fun and exploration.
