Why is the Saturn built so much better than the PlayStation?

>> No.5111940

It had to be better than the PlayStation at least at one thing.

the saturn was a piece of fucking shit.

Is it really though? What makes people say this? Is it really more durable, does playing cd-rs on it hurt the laser less?

It seems to have a better disc drive unit. In my experience my old Playstation stopped working as soon as 1998 or 99, while the Saturn still works to this day.

Yeah ps consoles are trash
I have lots of dead bodies back at my parents house and everytime I find one in the flea market ita already on its last days

Was it though? I always hear stories about the disc drives on these things dying. I wouldn’t know as I have zero experience with Saturn. But I do have 2 PS1s (one of them being mine from childhood) and they both work just fine still. But this is all anecdotal evidence, so whatever.

Because
>I always hear stories about the disc drives on these things dying.
And
>I do have 2 PS1s (one of them being mine from childhood) and they both work just fine
So I was simply wondering if they were actually, or if it’s just a case of some people take better care of their stuff and as a result lasts longer.

My disc drive died on it, after about six years back in the day, then I bought another one on Ebay for 20 bucks or something in about 2001, and it still works perfect to this day. I only used my PS1 for two years so I can't really compare, but I, know it's not retro, but compared to PS2, which died on me within a year two over the course of three consoles, I would say Saturn does better than Sony.

>> No.5112910

>>5111939

Because the PSX was cheap crap. Mine stopped working after 9 months. My jap launch Saturn still works.

>> No.5112939

>>5111939
It also cost 100 more than the playstation originally. I'm sure that has something to do with it. Sega released the dreamcast and that had pretty shit build quality on par with Playstation stuff, and it was half the price.

I do appreciate how sturdy the Saturn is. That thing is built like a fucking tank.

>>5112000
Not really a fair comparison because N64 had no lasers, moving mechanical parts, etc due to be cart-only.

>> No.5112942

>>5112115
I really hope my saturn never dies. I wonder how expensive those console are on ebay now. And I imagine only getting more expensive due to the hipster "underground" feel it has in the west.
If it does break I'm just going to buy a cheap broken one and see if I can replace out the defect part with a spare.

>> No.5112951

>>5111939
I had two Saturn's growing up and they both died within a year of regular use. I had a single Playstation that still works to this day, and I once accidentally spilled strawberry soda all over it and had to take it apart and clean all the sticky dried residue from the boards and circuits inside.

>> No.5112972

>>5112000
My 64 will sometimes suddenly reset during gameplay. My Saturn and the PSXes I've played have no such defects.

Incidentally, is there something I can do to fix this? It's a real bummer.

>> No.5112998

>>5112972
Are you using an official expansion pak? If not, get one. If you are, try re-seating it, or get another one. Almost every time I heard an N64 resetting by itself it was due to the Pak.

>> No.5113003

I dunno. My brother got a PlayStation around the same time that I got a Saturn. My Saturn died about two years ago and his PlayStation still works fine. Maybe I played my Saturn more and wore it down faster, but I am not sure. Anyway, its just one counterexample.
And if you don't mean durability, then what? Didn't Saturn's overly-complicated design make the simpler PlayStation comparatively easier to program for, resulting in a larger third party library? I prefer the Saturn because the games subjectively appeal to me more, and because Sega has more character as a company than Sony ever will. But to say that Saturn was just better made seems delusional to me.

>> No.5113012

Ya bullshit. In my time i have seen a bunch of dead PSX's and PS2's due to poor built quality. I haven't come a across a single broken saturn.

In japan people call Sony Products "time-bombs". Because the stuff dies on you shortly after the warranty has run out.

On a side note, Zwei was really disappointing to me. Played it for the first time on my new Saturn last month after finishing PD1 many times. The environments look nice but everything else felt so meh. The music (by comparison), boss fights, atmosphere. It just wasn't there for me.

>> No.5113274

I've never played a Saturn but I do like the build quality a lot. I think I'd like to get the original grey/blue Japanese Saturn.

>> No.5113279

>>5113274
Keep in mind that the Grey Jap model saturn is incomptabile with a handful of games if you go the PseudoSaturn piracy route. Notably, Oanzer Dragoon Zwei and Saga burned copies will not work.

>> No.5113431

>>5111939
Playstation was built to sell everywhere, so they made it cheap so they can flood the market (more units sold means the platform is more important to developers, which results in more games made, more games sold, more royalties collected).

Saturn was hated by Sega due to its high cost. There was a recent translated interview with Hideki Sato confirming this. They tried doing everything to cut costs, but it didn't work, they kept losing $100 per unit sold, and the only way to minimize losses were to stop producing it altogether in early 98. Imagine if they made it built crappier, they'd then lose even more money servicing the thing if it broke down more often.

>the Grey Jap model saturn is incomptabile with a handful of games if you go the PseudoSaturn piracy route

Bullshit, the CD Block hardware is identical. There are like 3 games that actually got problems in later hardware models, and they do it with original discs too, and they all got second revisions to fix the issue (Space Harrier, In the Hunt, Outrun). They lock up because the 68k was changed.

The Grey Model 1's can't use JHL loader, which is REQUIRED to boot PDS and PDZ. Yes, that applies even after patching the isos.

>> No.5113446

>>5113271
Really? while I agree nothing in Zwei compares to level 1's music on PD1, I think the overall soundtrack is better. In PD1, the rest of the tracks other than the first level just weren't as good.
I also think the overall game is MUCH better than PD1. Level design and boss fights are just better on Zwei. In PD1 everything feels much less thought out.
I think both have pretty good atmosphere, but again, in PD1, only the first level captures an unmatched atmosphere (that also wasn't recaptured on Zwei), but overall, the rest of the levels are a lot more variated on Zwei.

Sorry, to clarify you can actually boot both those games with a Grey Model 1. However, after getting past the first FMV in both games, the game will freeze. Loading an existing save in Saga won't work either.

>> No.5113487

>>5113443
yeah, note the part saying (not sure) on that page.

Here's some actual fucking hardware info. The launch models (the ones with the power supply on the top) can use CD Block firmware v1.04 or v1.05. His code is probably incompatible with the earlier version, 1.04, since every console made after uses CDB 1.05 (or 1.06). I'm basing this assumption on two facts, one is that the initial CDB ROM to get dumped, that all of the reverse engineering is based on that got Pseudo possible, was 1.05. And also because the 1.04 has some stupid bugs even an end user can notice, like that the console locks up if you run it with no drive connected (but it boots with 1.05).

However half the grey units use CDB 1.05, and the early white units were case swaps of late grey units (identical boards inside). If the grey units couldn't use the loader, then half the white units couldn't do it either.

regardless, it's not a problem if you use a modchip. Costs less and frees up the cart slot.

>>5113487
Got it. Guess mine was a 1.4 then.
>regardless, it's not a problem if you use a modchip. Costs less and frees up the cart slot.
Eh. I got one of these chink carts that has the 1MB mode, 4MB mode, memory back-up and PseudoSaturn built into the same cart for 50 bucks. I really need to learn to solder though. I could save so much dosh and headache.

>> No.5113509

>>5113496
>for 50 bucks

I got a modchip from china for $20 fifteen years ago and it's been working fine ever since. I still don't understand why Pseudo Saturn is a big deal - it doesn't do anything you couldn't do before, but it takes up the cart slot and has worse compatibility (and since it uses the cart slot, it probably doesn't even work all the time).
