The powerup system kinda sucked but Solar Striker was still a lot of fun.

And even then, it's honestly pretty flawed.

Training mode is completely pointless and you might as well start on Rookie and the way it increases the difficulty after each episode is odd so if you want to play the whole game on one of the easier difficulty settings you have to stop after the final level and select another episode.
Some weapons like the disruptor and plasma cannon are a waste of money and don't even deal any real damage and those screen-clearing bombs are also more or less worthless since they have to travel to the center of the screen first. So unless you are dead-center they can take up to two seconds until they activate and by that time whatever you wanted to blow up is probably already off the screen.
And as for the bosses, they have no interesting patterns or phases and essentially boil down to "fire a volley of bullets and missiles -> wait a few seconds -> repeat".
I also don't remember the game having ANY kind of backstory for why you are even doing all of this outside of the ending sequences and those told fuckall.

Considering its limitations the Game Boy had some great shooters. Xenon 2, Nemesis, Parodius, R-Type etc...

Alright shiposting aside, Air Gallet is pretty underrated and more importantly good. It's developed by Gazelle after Toaplan splintered off into several directions. It's also one of the few games this studio made.

Dunno what the team did but it's a fucking competent Gradius clone with plenty of originality, kicking music, a weird plot, and honest to god console playability. On the Amiga. A lot of the same team worked on Turrican 3 which also wowed me as a kid for doing stuff only consoles could - on one floppy disk at that.

Gonna go with SWIV for my pick, solid Amiga vertical shmup that can be played two ways, is free of levels - only different themed scenery/bosses as the entire game's streamed from disk as you go - and has a rocking title theme to boot. I have no clue what they were doing with the console ports of SWIV, they try but are way too different.

Twin Eagle changed my life when the slow helicopter gameplay suddenly transitions into dogfighting with jets from behind you, as 80s metal plays (with lyrics)

https://youtu.be/NarxSO1ugsM?t=1032

For 1988 it was only a year after the simplistic 1943 or Twin cobra. It feels like a generation leap in terms of audio and visuals.

It's amazing how consistently crappy western shmups were, they couldn't get the most basic aspects like movement and solid game feel down much less good level design, difficulty, balancing, depth, etc. Only good for screenshots and soundtracks

What if your ship had a beak?
Pretty strong level memorization aspect to this one, but it feels fair, and it's nice that you have to consider if you want a stronger attack in exchange for a bigger weak spot.

This game has a similar orbital positioning mechanic, where they drift behind you as you move
