I'm not american so that's why I'm asking: As an american kid was this cover appealing to you? Now that you are older and knows how the original cover looks like do you prefer the japanese version or the american version?

In general, did those american versions of game covers worked for you?

>> No.5103818

considering I bought the games every goddamn time, yes. It's not like we had the Japanese box art to compare it to at a quick google back in 199fuckwhenever. And this one at least gives off the sense of a hype ass fantasy adventure with an asshole dog man.

At the time, I probably would have preferred the Japanese art partially because back then partially because I thought everything with this style art was porn.

They did their best to hide "japanimation" style art in the early to mid 90s because it was strongly associated with porn and violence at the time.At my local video store in 1994 all anime was 18+, regardless if it was akira, ranma 1/2, or legit porn. In the comic stores it was mostly the lewd and violent manga that found it's way to the store shelves but to be fair even tames series had titties in them at the time.

Forgot pic, but this is what everyone immediately thought japanimation was like at the time BOF was released. On the local news channels and shows like "hard copy" or "indside edition" they would do scare tactics warning parents to keep their kids away from all japanese cartoons due to their explicit nature.

That cover? Yes, a bit. It's not particularly appealing but probably not for the reasons you think. The Japanese one wouldn't have been any better.

That cover looks like it's trying to cash in on the popularity of Conan the Barbarian, which is fine except Breath of Fire came out a decade too late for that. When I saw that, I saw a He-Man rip off several years after nobody gave a shit about He-Man. Plus it conveys the kind of desolate and sun-blasted wilderness typical of 80s Conan settings. I'm not usually a fan of that particular type of setting (though I don't hate it), so for that reason the cover wouldn't be especially appealing.

Basically, this cover tries too hard. The style itself isn't bad. I like the presentation of the characters. But it doesn't match what's in the game. If you flip the box over you'll see a couple of screenshots of bog standard top-down JRPG gameplay.

pic related was much more eye-catching to me.

I said ""eye-catching" though I guess reading is not something I should expect from someone who needs pictures on his box art. But it is also appealing.

The font is tasteful and elegant, rendered in shimmering gold 3-dimensional letters. No other box art text in this thread comes close to this level of detail. This is the kind of detail ignored by plebs, who see "just a title on a background." There's also an image of an ornate sword with a crystal orb embedded in the pommel. The only real issue is the fuzzy light effect looks kind of bad.

Also, the red background sure stood out on the shelves. It was "eye-catching."

I love the classic FF logos before we made the switch to the Japanese numbering, they really nail that fantasy book feeling. Though that would be a bit out of place in the more modern sci-fi direction the series started to take with 7 (and to a much lesser extent, 6).

Nice try, pleb. Not every box needs pictures on. Honestly the Japanese box art for Final Fantasy IV looks dumb. It looks like they wanted to do a text-only cover with one graphic (that silhouette of Kain that would become iconic), but some marketing droid said they needed some more graphics, so it has a bunch of Chibi characters on the front half of which don't even appear in the game.

The FF3us box added only a cartoon picture of a Moogle (the same one that had appeared in the magazine ads) and a shadow of a monster. Another great box. It's memorable, distinctive, and stands out from other games sitting on the shelf. It also trades on the popularity of the name and brand.

>>5104987
... which was not an advantage Final Fantasy 1 enjoyed. Indeed, when Final Fantasy 1 came out, JRPGs were not a recognized genre.

>> No.5105091

>>5103803
Honestly, if you ignore the fact that this is a hilariously unfitting style to represent the game with, it's not too bad. Very blatantly inspired by Conan, who was popular as fuck at the time, and that's not a negative if you want to attract customers.

No, this shit looked hideous to me and was a real disconnect from the actual art used in the game itself. I always knew something was wrong with these fucked up covers, but as a kid I wasn't quite aware they came from another country. Mostly I was offput by the huge disconnect in the art style, and the often superior quality of art in the instruction manual's or game itself.
