Is there a better DOOM wad than Suspended in Dusk?

What does /vr/ consider the greatest DOOM wad/mod ever created?

SID is definitely among the finest the community has ever produced.
We really lost someone great with Espi's passing, he made that shit with just his one arm, after the amputation, as I recall.

Actually, something that I want to give special props to for SID is that it goes for a dirty and washed out industrial aesthetic, with lots of brutalist concrete formations, rusty metal, and rivers of filth, a mostly muted palette with a predominance of gray, and generous sprinklings of tan, brown and beige.
In a way this brings to mind a lot of modern 'realistic' military shooters in their choice of palette for generic warzone environments, except here it works and is visually appealing and interesting, in part because there actually is quite a lot of color, either just the regular colorful appearances of Doom's monsters, like the Cacodemon, or the use of detail and setpieces with color to contrast, like lights, computer monitors, or the odd piece of carpeting.

It's hard to capture it with just one screenshot, best see it yourself.
The gameplay is quite nice too, it's not just pretty visuals, it'll put decent effort into challenging you.

One of the best I've played is Nihility, which is currently a WIP, released as an Episode 2 'shareware demo', subtitled "Infinite Teeth".

It's for Doom 1, and uses a mix of standard classic Doom resources, alpha + beta assets, DeHacked modifications, and a generous application of very suitable ambient sound effects, to make something which manages to feel oldschool (due to the aesthetics), yet also very fresh and new.
It manages to sell Doom a bit more on the horror side than the original could (though it's never pretends it isn't an action game, more just settling for gloom), and though the weapons aren't substantially different, a lot of the monsters are, varying from slight changes, to all new ones, all which are used cleverly to create some good and challenging encounters (along with some pretty mean but interesting traps).
Very exploration oriented too, with lots of cool secret areas to search for.

Supposedly, episodes 3 and 4 are in progress, the author mentioning that he would be mapping while strung out on amphetamines, which if the demo episode is anything to go by (almost feeling like it conveys a slight despair of withdrawal), should provide a slight change of pace.
No music (don't know if there's any plans to change that), so either let the deafening silence and ambient sounds sweep you in and get you entirely in the lonely and melancholic atmosphere, or put on something suitably atmospheric (perhaps the Quake, or Playstation Doom soundtrack).

memento mori is a personal favorite, though ive not played too many fangames. i also really like freedoom2 levels as well, as in i think they are genuinely well done which i found surprising as i didn't really like the first game as much

>> No.5108834

>>5108808
The original levels in Doom are all pretty good, generally, and there's a bunch of good levels in Doom 2, then there's some really great stuff in Final Doom, but in 25 years, the community has produced a bunch of stuff which has far surpassed what iD themselves did with the game.

As much as I like the base games, the fan made stuff is where the REAL fun begins, with some great things being made already in the 90's.

did you mean to quote me? either way i disagree with what you say, as i really like the feel of vanilla, and only try mapsets that aren't too experimental with the formula. so that said i hold vanilla in very high regards, i find it incredibly satisfying to play, though i dont care too much for challenge. if i ever did though i would probably bump the difficulty from hurt me plenty before trying a slaughterwad. and that said i cannot even beat level 4 of plutonia on the second easiest difficulty

>> No.5108959

>>5108858
If you like the vanilla game a lot, then you should try out Doom The Way Id Did It and Doom 2 The Way Id Did It, they're megawads with all new levels, but which are styled to feel like they could have been original iwad levels.

I've been seeing this complaint about BTSX E1 for years, and I've never understood it. Most maps were pretty distinct, IMO.
