Asking the modding niggas. I followed this guy tutorial on how to add custom textures into the game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UV3kbrbuw8 and it worked, only in the doom builder. In the game the textures are completely black. So what I did was to delete the image texturex and leave the patch of it there and it worked but showed up as "?" in doom builder. What gives?

The Super Shotgun has a shorter and wider barrel which gives more spread with your pellets, as anyone who has common sense and has actually used a shotgun could tell you.

Doomguy is 72 inches tall (6 ft) and scaling his height to the ground shows that the shots are effective up to 40 feet in distance before the spread becomes a pain in the ass, as does a normal shotgun with a short barrel.

Mountains of FPS decided to 'balance' their shotguns by making them all have insane spread patterns (or in some cases, making the shot literally stop existing after a certain set distance), which in turn just lead to a bunch of fucking stupid and worthless shotguns that you can't actually use like a real shotgun at all, basically being glorified point blank weapons.
Doom 3 does this.

You shouldn't have any kind of problem at all tagging a mansized target with a full (or near full) pattern at 30 feet, because that's the point, it's a firearm, not a melee weapon. So many games have shotguns so bad that they shouldn't even have shotguns at all, but they do because lazy devs do the stupid method of balancing, rather than think of something smart.

Powerful against things which aren't armored, mind you.
Which is a really basic way of balancing a shotgun; make it do less damage against certain enemies which are either armored or especially thick skinned, forcing you to adapt your tactics or use different weapons.
Optionally also setup scenarios where you're actually outranged if you try to use the shotgun, rather than just making the range really shit to compensate for lazier design.

Which, in a rare instance, was actually suitable for gameplay balance, as it gave you more damage (and more opportunity for pain states) for two shells than what you would get with the rest of the shotgun, at the expense of having basically none of the good range and tight spread of the regular shotgun.
The regular one is still always there and it's always useful, using less ammo than the SSG being a good incentive if you have no backpack and ammo being more scarce. You could waste just one or two zombies with an SSG blast, sure, but you could do just the same at less cost and longer range with your regular pump gun.

Bit more complex than that actually, but one could extrapolate that the pump shotgun has a MACVSOG style duckbill choke for a horizontal, but nominally tight spread, and that the double barrel has no choke at all (possibly it had one before being cut down, usually a feature on antique double barrels with fixed chokes, giving people the impression that the shorter barrel is what changes spread, once they're cut down).
The larger amount of pellets per shell could suggest smaller pellets, which would spread out faster than larger pellets, especially without a choke.
Gameplay wise, each individual shotgun pellet does the same kind of damage though (that of a pistol bullet, which with buckshot, is actually kind of right).

As for them then being the same ammo pool, well, that's just artistic license and gameplay simplicity. You also have no magazine changes for the pistol or chaingun, no reload animation for the pump shotgun, and the rocket launcher seems to endlessly feed rocket after rocket with no really visible feed mechanism or magazine.

I'm looking for a pretty old weapon/monster replacement wad (downloaded sometime in the end of 2011) that I found in the best-ever server before it got wiped. I like to draw extremely simple shapes at first, to sort of sketch out what the flow of the map is going to be, how I expect the player will traverse the map. If there are any important landmarks I want, those are marked as blobs with text describing them. world tour is a bastardized version of the base game that comes bundled with a new episode by some of the original map designers, a couple new enemies that look pretty bad, a recolor of the freezethrower that is just a flamethrower, and some new recorded lines by Jon St. John.

They didnt fuck up the bitrate. They fucked up the sampling frequency conversion.
Old sounds and lines were recorded at various frequencies for the sake of optimisation, from 6khz to 11khz.

New lines were recorded at 48khz, For whatever reason they decided to upsample all of the old sound effects to that value as well, and used very basic antialiasing while doing which resulted in sounds being muffled, since the harsh spikes on both low and high ends (intentionally done so for optimisation+clarity of sound originally) got "smoothed out".

Thanks for the demo! Balance was set for myself (having not played any doom for about 6 months before making this map) and assuming no secrets found, and then a bit easier again. Looks like I went a bit too far. 100 mins doesn't give time for much playtesting and balancing, just making sure all the linedefs work.

By the way, the monster you didn't kill was an archvile that gets released nearly at the end. He's only a problem if you screw up the last few platforms. The only balance adjustment I did was to release him then. He was originally released with the cacos but that was way too hard unless you rushed the invincibility and saw him early (which is unlikely behind a cloud of cacos).

I'm sorry you don't like quake, because i absolutely love the art and atmosphere, and wish there was any other game like it. All the subsequent quakes have been much more sci-fi, unfortutnatly, and nothing has that eclectic blend of surreal medieval sci-fi horror as quake.
The weapons are so-so, pretty good but not the best lineup, but the physics are some of the best of any FPS. I mean, quake physics is probably the most iconic and most reproduced of any FPS.

Quake enemies actually have the same or less health than doom enemies - Grunt has 30HP, Shotgun guy has 30HP.

Shambler has 600 HP, Mancubus has 600

Spider demon has 3000 HP, Cyberdemon has 4000 HP.

The main difference is the doom shotgun does a lot more damage. Quake shotgun does 24 damage, Doom shotgun can do up to 105 damage.
Quake is all about quad damage and grenades / rockets, while doom has no quad damage so needs higher damage output on the base weapons in order to work.

While in doom your main weapon is the double barreled shotgun, in quake your main weapon is the rocket launcher - you probably just played quake thinking it was supposed to be doom in 3D.

Having the only real problem be difficulty is probably a nice problem to have, because then that's just a matter of adjusting enemy/resource placement for different difficulties. The main thing BD did right in my opinion is feedback.
Every type of enemies react to the weapon they are being shot with and location shot at with a big variety of different animations,
so that every weapon feels much different from another, and each gives its own brand of violent satisfaction.
Everything else Mark added on top of that was more of a detriment to the mod.

BD-light removes location-based damage and quite a lot of death animations that were dependent on that, like sawing in half with chainsaw (regular death now), imps and zombiemen losing their jaws from the fist-to-the-face, wall-slump animation from being killed close to a wall, and so on.
So... BD-light removes not only everything bad that was about BD, but also only thing I played BD for, leaving only some graphical bells and whistles and some random death animations that don't feel satisfying anymore because they are independent from hit location.

I know it's intended to clean up code and gameplay but I feel that at this point whoever does this already tossed the baby out with the bathwater.

Trying to mod Reelism to increase the spawn density, but while I found the SpawnHere function that spawns enemies and items, running the command multiple times doesn't increase the enemy count. Also tried duplicating Spawn() within SpawnHere() and making the EnemySpawner actor run the spawn script multiple times, neither of which did anything. I'm hoping that if I can wrap my head around this, I can do more serious changes to the mod.

I disagree. I think the reason high-res looks bad on 'low poly' geometry is due to the uncanny look of fake-texturing (remember, textures are nothing more than a common hack making up for using triangles rather than highly detailed voxels). This uncanny look can be offset by correctly applying lighting - this is the basis of bump mapping, parallax mapping (providing fake depth), SSAO and other edge-based shadow techniques, and displacement mapping (though it seems that technique might not be so popular any more).
I think with the right bump maps, good lighting and potentially even a clever use of displacement mapping, the old brushwork of these maps wouldn't look uncanny.
That said, of course it would be a big job with lots of trial & error to see what works.

Even with tesselation which would ACTUALLY change the visual representation of geometry you still gonna get uncanny valey effect because the level geometry itself will remain simple, so it will still be a straight wall with some things sticking out of it or being sunk in, and that efects still can't be too pronounced because they have no actual physics applied to them

Here's a thing visual designers for any game have to consider: consistency in visual fidelity, i.e. every element of the scene must be of about the same complexity, or it will stick out like a sore thumb
you can see this in the efforts of amature mappers where they put in some extra-detailed decoration effort into some area then slack off in a nearby area - it will result in a clash
Same with texture res/object complexity. An extreme example: putting photo-realistic face on a low-poly head Golden-eye style would never look good, no matter what people say
Doom and any other low-fi maps are the same - any kind of texture replacement or a shader trick would NOT add any detail to the environment, only to the flat surfaces, and the surfaces themselves would still remain flat for any practical purpose, which would result in exactly same kind of clash

Most people who can ignore it are the ones that don't pay attention to the environment as a whole, only picking up on separate details, but not on how they go together.
Others just cant help but notice.

Only anime/cartoon-styles like Megaman Legends can get away with it, but anime faces are already visually flat in anime itself, and flat-shaded styles tend to alleviate the clash due to being inherently obviously unnatural

I see what you're saying re consistent, look, and yeah it's still a problem, however i've seen many very low-poly simple scenes that look great (with both high and low-res textures) due to lighting. Of course, the caveat is that a modder would have a lot of trouble re-orienting textures, etc, as you say they can't just drop-in a high-res version and hope it displays well.

I have an assertion here that since the UAC could probably have all their guns CNC/3d printed and be cheap bastards about it, that all the firearms the UAC has are oversized versions of terrestrial models.

- Shotgun shells are 10 Gauge 3.5" magnums with 7 pellets of .40 or .45 caliber buckshot. Thus every hit does full pistol strength damage. It gives Master Chief's 8 Gauge a run for its money.
- The Beretta is in 10mm or even a shortened .50AE. Every magazine is 10 shots after all, normally a pistol or rifle mag in post-current-year would have at least 20 in it. This is also why doomguy only gets 2.5 shots per second.
- Bullets are powerful enough to bother making a heavier support weapon to fire them, a chaingun for reliability and for stability.

When you fire 2 Barrels at exactly the same time the muzzle blast from each barrel deflects the shot pattern from the opposite wad sideways and makes that wad start spinning. This produces a Horizontal shot pattern. Having a shorter barrel means there's more muzzle blast and it makes for a wider pattern because its more disruptive to the pellets coming out.

The main issue I think is that there was no Damage Typing considerations done in the iD games for a long time. Or in general the FPS games of that era. They were pretty damn simple in that regard.

For example the Shotgun does almost as much damage as the Rocket Launcher verses the Cyber and Spider bosses. These dont take damage from any explosions so the 20 dice of projectile damage is the only damage they take from a rocket, which over the large number of hits it takes only averages out to about 90 points. The Shotgun does 70 and is alot easier to use defensively than the RL.

Why should the Shotgun do much if any damage to one of these beasts when its a superficially damaging (as in, not much penetration) anti-personnel weapon and these creatures are Large Vehicular style enemies which should require anti-armor weapons to take out?

Damage Typing makes sense here, since they dont take the splash damage they should take double damage from rockets since thats the weapon designed to kill them (which gives an excuse to lower the fire rate on the RL too). While making them take Half damage or less from all bullet and shotgun weapons. Energy weapons are also designed to kill them, so those just stay as they are.

Its also known that a Point Blank hit from a shotgun is alot deadlier than being hit at a distance, even if all the pellets still connect. So another consideration that could've been made is measuring how far away the enemy is from the shooter. If they're up close make the pellets do the default damage, but if they're farther than 256 map units lower the hitscan dice multiplier by 1 (1d3x4), and at 512 units or further lower it by 1 again (1d3x3).

Its not hard to do this stuff even back in 1994 or 1995... just check out the kinda mad calculations going on in XCom. They were just lazy.

One good balance idea to do with this is make rockets do 40 dice of projectile damage but you only get 3 or 4 rockets per rocket box. Thats more realistic since taking a direct hit from an explosive will fuck up your world alot more than the external blast will.

Then make Shotguns do shit damage inherently and just provide a damage multiplier against enemies who are most affected by it. I would even make the damage more random so it doesnt feel so robotic and systematic (use the 1d5 calculation the enemy hitscans use). Maybe Dice x2 damage and soft targets or flying enemies take x4 damage.

The SSG is also a classic example of a need for Damage Typing. They gave it 20 pellets because they wanted it to do 200 damage on a full blast. But that could have been accomplished by making it shoot 14 pellets, natural and logical considering it fires two shells, and give it a damage multiplier of x7 to the bullet dice instead of x5 so that each pellet did 14 on average.

Another thing game designers frequently did back in the 90s was administer rules on a case by case basis. Like how the Shambler in quake "takes half damage if its a rocket or grenade" or the aforementioned in Doom making a major boss "does not take splash damage". This too was very lazy with no forward thinking involved, if it gets the job done then good type of attitude. I think it hearkens back to Dungeons & Dragons since that game is pretty much duct taped together with this kind of rules mentality.

- Cyberdemon Rocket is a Damage Type, which is applied to the projectile and its splash damage.
- Cyberdemons take 0% damage from Cyberdemon Rockets damage type.

They're both auto cartridges carrying the same bullet pretty much. But the gastrointestinal only hits for 1/3 the firepower.

Maybe if you split the difference between them you get 2/3rds the firepower. Which is like a .44 magnum and I think would be well worth it.

You're also dreadfully underestimating the effectiveness of the stability of heavy bullets being compensated with a ladder/flip up sight. The 40mm grenade launcher system depends on this because if you thought a .45 had a rainbow trajectory a 40mm has the trajectory of a golf ball.

If you CNC scaled up a Beretta from 9mm to something larger you would have to alter the handgrip proportions to accept an out of proportion longer bullet.
Overall OAL length would have to stick to 36mm at most because thats what the 5.7x28 has and above that it starts getting to be a bear to hold a pistol. Keep in mind the Beretta is a full width double stacking gun, the FiveSeven is double stack but it isnt full width since the inside of the magazine is barely half an inch.

But like you said anything in the normal case length of 20-25mm just doesnt have enough power. I would've suggested the 10mm Auto but it doesnt have enough firepower either and they'd want heavy bullets (like 300 grain) to penetrate deep into demon muscle tissue.

Nobody has done this or made this jump before because anything magnum related usually just gets put into a revolver, or goes into a custom fudd gun like the desert eagle

Actually to goe full autist with this, I think this example would actually work:
- Beretta M96 (.40sw) vertec model.
- Scaled up by about x1.2 or x1.21 on all axes.

Firing chamber modified to shape the contour of the custom round. Designer stretches the rifling pattern in the barrel to change the twist rate and reduces the extrusion so it doesnt proportionally dig deeper into the bullet.
Designer could even take the recessed trigger used in trigger jobs for a shorter pull and use the model for that to print instead of the standard trigger.
Magazine capacity 13 with scaled up magazines but they'd only load it to 10 for reliability, should hold the ammunition just fine but the feed lips might have to be bent slightly.

For the ammo I had a similar idea about the Nailguns in Quake that they were actually something like 10mm Auto that had the metal armor piercing bolt loaded into them and then were belted for use in the weapons. Made up a fanfic and rpg setting for Quake1 that I havent used yet where the nailguns were actually used for construction but dictated to the defense contractor they also had to double as good close range weapons too. That way the thousands upon thousands of nail strips available for off-world construction could be readily used as ammunition too, no need whatsoever for a separate logistics supply train except for the shotgun shells.

Also no game should make you have to switch weapons to kill an enemy. Unless its a rare enemy with that particular gimmick. If anything the trick to quake monsters is figuring out their stun cooldown so you know when to shoot them.

I dont consider Hexen's Items to be weapons and unlike its predecessor it didnt even have a Tome Of Power.

Another problem with Hexen was only the first level had non-puzzle involvement. Each Hub should have had at least one map that you had to traverse just to get through it to reach another map containing puzzles, and force the player to traverse through it more than once too.

Depends really, i like that in doom and quake the weapons are unique and good for different enemies/situations. FPS where weapons are all interchangeable are silly - why bother having multiple weapons at all.
