The team that made them left Square, and made a terrible OG Xbox game called Kabuki Warriors. No reason for square not to continue it themselves imo, but it might be out of tha games reception, or Square's respect for the original dev. Thar's the reason they haven't made Xenogears sequels.

So, it's not 'the best' retro game by any stretch, but Soul of the Samurai for PS1 is VERY enjoyable. Plus, one of the characters you can choose is a ronin, who fights other ronin. Pretty cool, honestly.

Historical shinobi in Japan mainly relied on simple commoner disguises and rumors of them having magic.

Literally and figuratively what did you mean by this? There is a fuck-huge class distinction between the two: the former composed mostly of the poor, the latter being composed of the aristocracy. Literary interest reflects this divide, as there are virtually no stories from the pre-Sengoku period which star ninjas. This lack of interest is, in large part, because the samurai were romantically seen as noble fighters, while the shinobi were seen by the masses as base, reprehensible cowards. They are certainly not the same, or even similar: ninjas are spies, samurai are military commanders. [A western equivalent would be saying that most CIA field agents are also Army generals — ridiculous.]
