This game definitely has an interesting playstyle to it.

I had this game when I was pretty young. Young enough to be utterly terrified of the part where everything freezes. Not going to say any more on that.

I love the weird art style and sound track. There's something really off about it, and I sensed that even when I was pretty young. Played through it a couple times since and loved it. Tried the first game fairly recently, as I never had a copy, and I couldn't get into it. it just doesn't seem as melancholic or atmospheric. I also love the way you interact with objects, it gives it a very odd early 3D charm, where everything rendered well must be used for something, and you have to work out what that might be.

This was definitely the game I have the fondest memories of on the PS1. And I had a Japanese copy of it so it made the game all the more mysterious to me, I had beaten a surprising amount of sidequests on that game all things considered but of course I never completed it.
Imagine my surprise when I bought the PSN version on PS3 to see that for some reason they had the Japanese version on the US store... I still need to do a proper playthrough of it and finish this awesome game that still fascinates me.

The NTSC-U version has emulation issues on PS3 (mostly with music tracks not looping properly). The company that (I think) currently owns the IP patched the NTSC-U version a few years back to fix the issue, so it's now in English on PSN. Since it was a game patch and not an emulator fix, the audio bug still occurs with disc copies of the game.

Tombi 1 looked better and it was more whimsical, but Tombi 2 has better level design and ironed out a few issues in game progression from Tombi 1 without making the core game worse, I'd say they're about the same really, if Tombi 2 had better framerates I'd put it above Tombi 1 despite the "inferior" graphics and the shitty minecart minigame holy fuck who thought that was okay?

It's pretty great. A lot of people love Tomba 1 more. I love both and this is just as memorable to be honest. Not as bullshitty with the lives system because... it has none. Only thing is, the music and graphics take a step down in my opinion. The transition to 3D ain't that clever.
