Easily Super Butoden 2.
By the way OP, yours is Super Gokuden? I can't say it's one of my favorites, but it does have a lot of interesting shit in it, I've been playing it from time to time trying to get all the possible scenarios. Just learned recently that you can customize your move pool for battles. I
bruteforced my way through the game with KKH.

I mean, yeah, they were Bandai games and from a franchise that was being exploited, so of course they shat a lot of them in a short frame of time and low to medium budget projects. So you may be right that they aren't VERY good, but some of them are good, you can have a favorite among them. I personally love Butoden 2 and 3 and Hyper Dimension, I think they are legit good games.
Games like Legends or the RPG games I think are alright, but more for fans of the series only. If you dig DBZ, those games are cool because they've got a lot of things from the source right, but gameplay and game design is so-so.
The fighting games might not be the best fighters ever, but Butoden 2 and 3 are very unique and can get actually quite fun when you understand the game beyond surface KKH spamming, and Hyper Dimension is just incredible from a presentation point, the graphics are top notch DBZ 2D spritework, gameplay itself is solid although more of a SF clone, not bad though.

Why is pic related so bad? I remember loving it as a kid so I tried it again recently. Holy shit. The animations are so bad, nothing connects, characters have the most bizzare attacks that whiff badly and have huge recovery times. Shit roster, half the thing is goddamn Goku variants. Power battles and meteor attacks are a pain in the ass to activate. Just bad all around. The only positive is the low poly models look really good for the time. Otherwise that's my most hated /vr/ Dragon Ball game.

Favorite /vr/ DB game is probably Butoden 3. Favorite non-/vr/ game is def a tie between Budokai 3 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Imo, those two games are the height of DBZ fighting games.

Yeah the intro is pretty legendary. The animation quality is on par with the movies so it's cool seeing the anime sagas in quality animation. But yeah the game's broken or rushed or something, maybe a bit of both. The only characters with solid linear attacks are the Gokus. And kid Goku and Pan are broken because their hitbox is so small it gives them an unfair advantage. Add in the super delayed lag with button inputs and the warm-up/cool down from attacks leaving you wide open. We didn't get anything good, GT related, until Budokai.

In Super Butoden 3 they didn't even bother to make a story mode (which is funny because "Butoden" means "battle story", it's supposed to focus on story), but as other anon said the only Butoden game that actually had a focus on story was Butoden 2, which actually has an impressive story mode with lots of cutscenes and an interactive element.
>>5104068
I didn't play that one, but I played Extreme Butoden on 3DS (just the demo) and... it's not a real Butoden game. And from what I could see from the DS game you posted, that's not a real Butoden game either. Butoden needs the split-screen, it's what made these games so unique. It's kind of cool that they included Super Butoden 2 with Extreme Butoden, kind of speaks how much of a cult classic that game is, although they had to change the music because of that silly Yamamoto drama about "rippin off" songs.
>>5104082
I only played Legends on PS1, heard it's a bit better on Saturn actually. Legends is an interesting game, I love its presentation and concept, but gameplay can get a bit repetitive and mindless. Still worth it if you like DBZ for sure.
Shin Butoden is actually a disappointment. Great roster, but the actual game design is sloppy - controls feel loose, but the worse offender is how small stages are, ruining the whole idea of Butoden's split-screen.
>>5103610
I believe it's because they basically took sprites from the SNES games and recolored them for the Mega Drive, which doesn't have as many colors. Still I like Buyu Retsuden, it's pretty much a Butoden game with the split screen, and has a pretty good roster. It was the first DBZ fighting game to finally include Krilin.

I also had the japanese version, got it in 1997 thanks to PS1 piracy.
By that time, I was already familiar with the whole DB universe, I had already read the whole manga in spanish, and watched all of the movies, despite cable TV only airing original DB still (DBZ debuted in 98 here).
But yeah I can relate to that mind fuck moment when you see stuff you aren't familiar with. Before actually reading the manga, I only vaguely knew DBZ, but I was only familiar with Dragon Ball, kid goku. So when I first played the SNES and Mega Drive game (around 1996 I guess), I couldn't stop wondering who were all these weird characters, like Vegeta, Piccolo (at that point I think not even King Piccolo saga was airing), Cell, etc.
The story mode of Super Butoden 2 was my first time "watching" the Cell game, without understanding anything because I played it in japanese as well.

it's kind of like the Gohan theme of Butoden 3, but with a darker tone.
If you like the game soundtracks, try listening to the DBZ "Hit Song Collection" series, the ones from 1992/1993 were done by "Monolith Project", who was a team of Yamauchi and various people who worked on the games soundtracks. They sound a lot like the arranged soundtracks.

I remember this being in my hometown arcade/ donut shop.

At the time any product DB related was a damn rarity to see and it was more underground than anything. So finding a street fighter like fighting game was mind blowing to see. Man I miss arcades. Also I still kind of dig the music.
