Okay /vr/, after trying several recommended PC-Engine emulators and not having any luck, I finally figured that Magic Engine works on my computer only when in full screen. I feel like an idiot.

I hear it's the go-to system for shmups, so I'm starting off with some Gradius. What are some more recommendations? Arcade ports are welcome, it seems to have lots of good ones.

Also, VALIS THE FUCKING FANTASM SOLDIER

Not a shmup.
Great game, though.

I second the Ootake recommendation, I've had much better playback on games with that emu over Magic Engine.

I couldn't find another shmup thread here or on any other board, so thread hijack.

I dusted off my 360 to play some new and old shmups and I need a controller with decent 2D controls.

This one seems perfect, but the reviews seem to make it out to be very fragile. Anyone have one and like it?

Use Retroarch. Works very well for PC Engine. Uses Mednafen core.

Or use Mednafen directly, but it's a bit of a pain since it's command line only and you need a frontend.

Or, you know, just download Ootake.

Not saying that Retroarch isn't cool, just saying that specialized emulators tend to have more features and are more suited to running one thing.

>> No.514750

>>514742

Well, whatever. STill better than Magic Engine. And thye actually want you to pay money for that. Payware emulators = eat a huge dick.

>> No.514753

>>514742
RetroArch doesn't make its own emulation cores, it uses ones ported from other emulators.

>> No.514759

>>514750
Yeah, Magic Engine sucks dick and became obsolete as soon as Ootake was out.
That he still has the audacity to charge money for it is insulting to the emu scene on the whole.

>> No.514761

>>514753

Yeah, but the original emulators tend to have more options. For instance, Nestopia has a no sprite liimit option. To enable that you have to build a whole new core. Core options are coming up in the future though.

A JP developer. Can I take a guess and say that it's closed source?

>> No.514773

>>514753
Right, but there are features that you'll miss out on that are built into specialized emulators, extreme customizabiliy in Ootake's case. Also, just less complex to download a specialized emulator. You simply extract it and start using it.
I personally don' see the point of Retroarch unless you're using it on a non PC system.

Thank God. There's so many good JP developers who make these great Emulators. But because they're closed source, the emulators die and stop being updated. You then have to wait years for a competing open source emulator to get as good enough to compete. It's so stupid. The Emu scene would be so much better if JP developers adopted the open source model. But a lot of them don't want Baka Gaijin messing with their code.

They guy making it seems like a really cool guy and is thinking globally in his development.
His thoughts on the Magic Engine describes his (somewhat engrish) views on the matter:

>There are no feelings that criticize "MagicEngine". I think that it did
wonderful work. But, it greatly delayed the development of "PC Engine"
emulator compared with other machine(NES,SNES,GENESIS,etc.) emulators.
Because the monopolized (even the BAD ROM-image could be played)
"MagicEngine" was "Source closed-door".
Other machine(NES,SNES,GENESIS,etc.) emulators has developed greatly by an
excellent source code and information on hot people.

I can honestly agree. I find it on Android worlds more convenient and better to use than on PC.

Can definitely see the use in a multi-system emulator or an organizer for one though, especially if you have a fuckton of systems.

Paranoia/Psychosis is an interesting PC-Engine shmup with some really trippy art and a strange backstory (the entire game takes place within the main character's mind). Play the Japanese version (Paranoia) if you want to see the bad guy flip you off and say "FUCK YOU" betwen levels.

Zero Wing is pretty good just for the music. The game itself is alright. Most people prefer the Genesis OST but I disagree with them.
