Had a pretty surreal conversation with a coworker recently; found out he worked at the funcoland in my child hood town, and he was most likely working the counter when I first laid eyes on SMRPG. 20 years later, he's sitting next to me at work.

I loved picking up one in the store and easily having an idea of what games were worth at the time. Also being able to test out games I was interested in before buying blew my mind. Gamecrazy had its charms for a while there but nothing compares to Funcoland.

Age of 16 I began my career in Sears Video game section. By 18, I moved on to a real job, and as anyone with a real job knows starting out is hard. I quit sears, and got a job at "Media Play" where I worked on weekends. I think it was part of a larger chain, and obviously went out of business too. Years later I was well on my way in my construction career, and wanted to do something with my spare time over the holidays and worked at Babbages. I refused to use the register, and I was the only PC-centric employee in the whole store. I was exceptional at alphabetizing the displays and took keeping the floors clean very seriously. That was the last retail job I worked. The employees there were just like me....Just trying to make it.

I do miss some of these places...but times have changed. Online retail is the new hotness. I avoid new stuff because I see it as a money pit, but that is because I am just a Xoomer.

I wish I knew about this place growing up. I was always a "generation behind" with my video games. My most up to date console until 99 was an NES for example. At the time I never even considered buying additional games for it. Available to me were Mario 3, Punch-Out, Rad Racer, Ultima 3, and Golf. I could've browsed funcoland or similar places and gotten all the best games for dirt fucking cheap back then. Oh well.
