Honestly this. Genesis sounds likea badass gaming machine and I loveits sound for the same reason people love NES chiptunes. Sure, the SNES has a beefy soundchip capable of a lotof things, but to me it sounds generic as well as muffled and muddy.

For example I love the atmospheric music of Super Metroid and the compositions are great, but the sound quality of that game is shit. It's so flat muffled, likeI have pillows covering the speakers. Very few SNES compositions have any "oomph" to them

i think it really isn't a case of which console sounds better, but the games and who was in charge of arranging the music. earthbound's soundtrack for example sounds brilliant, with lots of good samples. earlier games etc would have all just lazily used the same default samples

I've finally gotten around to playing the Phantasy Star games, and in terms of music this track is probably my favorite. I have a thing for that 80's bass-snare-bass drum beat, and that section of quick staccato notes always puts a smile on my face, until i get into a battle and it ends.
