There's a LOT of reasons why people don't like it, and I think the people who don't like it all likely have their own reasons for not liking it.

Here's a posting about someone discovering a massive memory leak that used up 4GB of ram. While I have yet to see something this massive, I have definitely noticed Systemd using more memory than the alternatives, and some leakage here and there as well.
https://serverfault.com/questions/755818/systemd-using-4gb-ram-after-18-days-of-uptime

Some see it as an unnecessary security risk due to its massive attack surface. It recently hit 1 million lines of code.
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=systemd-2017-Git-Activity

Some don't like it because they dislike its habit of scope creep. The project ends up assimilating things that historically should not have anything to do with init. gif related.
https://suckless.org/sucks/systemd

There's also some other design decisions that people have an issue with, such as using Google DNS by default (because of course systemd can handle DNS), using binary logs, etc.

Lastly there's the conspiracy theory side of it, which alleges that systemd is an NSA attempt to compromise GNU/Linux, and due to Systemd as a project moving way too fast, it can't be properly audited.

It was a failed business strategy. The idea was that with so much ports, modding and community the quake and doom names would get huge amounts of free publicity. They succeeded in becoming well-known yes, but practically gave away their IP in the process.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 still works on Windows 10 despite being made for Win95 and also has thriving modding community without source code being released to the public. It's not the matter of having source code to fiddle in, it's about the dedication of community to make stuff for the game. Diablo1 has several different "ports" being developed despite source code leaking only few months ago.

Publishing the source code means that id's games have practically endless shelf life. They can be enjoyed again and again in any number of ways on any platform at any time, while people wait to pay Nintendo yet again to have another copy of the Super Mario Bros 3 ROM that can't be improved or extended in any way.

You're kidding, right? id is barely still functioning as a company. Both Doom and Quake series are at an unimaginably low commercial value. I'm pretty sure a lot of heavy fps players have never even heard of Quake Champions. Sure id turning to shit caused a lot of it, however if the IP was really strong that wouldn't matter, they would get more revenue and invest more in the next iteration.

If Nintendo had release the source code to Super Smash Bros. or Mario Kart you might have a similar thing happen there. The community would grab it and essentially go crazy with it forever. Nintendo coming out with a new game every few years and people wouldn't be as interested. I'm not insulting Nintendo here, I'm saying that if you give away all your IPs then it's harder trying to sell them in future. Same with Blizzard and Starcraft, if the community already had proto Starcraft 2 made themselves they wouldn't bother.

That's the way forward, it was a failed experiment. That's why no company gives out any of their source code anymore. I thought everyone knew this, it's so obvious.

>> No.5088406

>>5088108
No it didn't you dingus. They gave away the source code, not the game itself (the compiled binaries and data files). So people still need to buy the game to play it legally. And anyone who would pirate the data files would pirate the exe as well.

Doom has been a household name for years, source code aside. an aside, the current status / financial health of a company has little bearing on the cultural relevance / impact of their IPs, Doom arguably having the greatest (of id's catalogue.)

also, while releasing the code may have hurt id, it only hurts the community to the extent that they still rely on id for new content. given that they've never outdone their older properties (original Doom(s) and Quake 3 come to mind), for a retro-exclusive gamer like me, there's little downside to having the community take the reins. of course it'd be ideal to have id healthy and actively putting out good content, but frankly they've already put out their best work, IMO. might as well open it up to the fans, some of whom make damn good wads. doesn't mean it's not a failed business strategy, but works for me.

Quake Champions failed because arena shooters are a niche market.

id is owned by Bethesda, they only had to swallow the moderate losses of QC and Rage. nu-Doom made them a huge profit. Especially now that id is sharing its tech with Arkane, Machinegames and Tango.

Don’t forget ID licensed out the Quake 3 engine as well which was used in the first few Call of Dutys. I don’t see any evidence they failed as a company, they’re still in existence which is more to be said than most 80s and 90s PC developers. Their superstars left the company but really that’s the same for any company on a long enough timeline.

BSP trees are the product of basically 25 years of various mathematicians and computer scientists chipping away at the problem.

Carmack didn't come up with the formulae himself. He just managed to get them running fast and accurate enough for the purpose of a videogame on the hardware of the day. A very far from trivial task, but he's not the boy genius who singlehandedly invented realtime 3D, as some people would have you believe.

He drew upon decades of Compsci work. He stood upon the shoulders of giants.

I think what makes Doom 4 work is that it tries to do more of its own thing, rather than trying to senselessly ape the classic games, which was what some people wanted, for some reason (if I want classic Doom, I'll play classic Doom, like usual).

Hardly perfect, but I found it a fun and satisfying game, and I'm hoping they'll improve on it and fix the flaws in 5.
