Did Nintendo ever make a game that could compete against Ecco the Dolphin?

Nope. Everyone remembers how nothing Nintendo made ever competed with Ecco the Dolphin, so Nintendo sales tanked hard and the company was forced to declare bankruptcy and leave the video game market in the 90s.

I remember when I was a kid and hearing from a friend that they wouldn't be releasing anything after the Super Nintendo so all the Sega kids were making fun of others at school for having a NES or SNES. I got on board the Sega train and got myself a Saturn though and was pleased with it. Incredibly diverse library of games and I'm glad to this day Sega still reigns king, even if Sony does produce some decent stuff sometimes (really did like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon)

No one has ever made another game like Ecco. Even the fourth game was almost nothing like it, so there's really no competition. I will say this though, I like both of them better than any of Nintendo's first party stuff then.

This game gives me anxiety. It's like one long Sonic drowning sequence

That's it's goal. Ecco is a game about being patient and precise under pressure. That's probably why most people hate it.

Nintendo has never really been that kind of company. They mostly just make what they know will sell. Sega was always willing to go out on a limb.

Sadly this attitude ended up being Sega's downfall. Hopefully someday a company will be as innovative as Sega was and as successful and Nintendo is.

Hopefully someday we will see more games like Ecco.

I always found ecco had a unique kind of murky and sad atmosphere.

I don't think weird stuff will ever have a chance of becoming massively popular franchises. Most people are too lame to understand the fun of being a dolphin caught in a lonely sci-fi journey.

An Ecco game today would be amazing. Ecco on dreamcast was the scariest game I ever played, probably due to the fog, but the hanging pools or whatever they were called terrified the heck out of me.

Enix, third party, series originated on PC-98, shit controls, not same feel, yadda yadda.

If you want the aquatic platforming part, Densetsu no Stafy.
The atmosphere? Unmatched.

>>5088692
Sega went under because they had a certain american executive hell bent on making them miss an entire console generation, then release the successor console at half the target market price (that was already sold at a loss), and in the meanwhile do his best to piss off third parties from localization companies to Japanese developers who WANTED to piss off sony to make a point, and then sport companies.

The innovative studios were horribly mismanaged as well. Planned sequels for Comix Zone and Sonic on the Saturn squandered left and right. Saturn was a pain to develop for but it was nothing good documentation, support and not sabotaging the certification process, couldn't fix.

what console generation did sega miss?

SMS - NES
GENESIS - SNES
SATURN - PSX
DREAMCAST - XBOX - PS2

I don't see any missed generations. They just dropped out after DC.

Yeah well that shit sucks. I like to feel good when I play video games, not bad.

>> No.5091358

>>5091110
That doesn't mean it sucks, just that it's not your idea of a fun game. Which is totally fair.
