SH2 isn't as good in terms of gameplay. Vastly improved story and presentation, but most of the gameplay sections were far more boring IMO. It always felt really bare bones to me as a survival horror game. Maybe it's the pacing or the areas, but for whatever reason it doesn't work nearly as well for me as 1 did.

3 is better or at least on par, but I prefer the story in 1.

SH4 has shit controls and literally half of the game is an escort mission, and a shit one at that.

Silent Hill 2 has the same gameplay as 1 though, 3 has the most refined gameplay with 4 behind it. The escort Mission in 4 is impossible to fail as Eileen never dies and she can use weapons. On top of that you can just use a holy candle beside her before picking up the umbilical cord if you want the good ending that bad.
