>Try to play an Ultima game for the first time to see how proto Tibia is like

This is an exact quote.
>This game is a world of its own. Every person in the game has a personality, and you will really care about the world of Britannia when you play this. This feels more like a vacation than a game. Please do yourself a favor and grab this one now so you can see what I'm talking about.

>wow sounds good let's get ultima 7
>hmmmm serpent isle? sure whatever
>game starts normally
>partners disappear
>walking as if each tile was a cpu cycle in and of itself
>NPCs groan on about incoherent nonsense that I cant skip
>this

Is this the most schizophrenic game or what? I never felt so dazed trying to understand a game in my life. Where can I get an old school RPG experience?

Anon, but first three games are simply boring to play. It's just half-baked dungeon crawling. So it's less of "muh story" (especially since it's pretty standard and straight-forward) and much more about "the game doesn't suck anymore"

But Ultima 4 still sucks. Ultima 5-6 are the actually good ones.

>> No.5085058

It's not the same. 4 had nothing to do with 1-3 beyond a few returning names.
Meanwhile 5 lets you revisit the world from 4, meet old companions and expands upon the concept of the virtues introduced in 4.

You don't have to finish 4 to the bitter end but you should spend some time exploring the land and cities. The important part is comprehending the virtues, not mastering the Abyss.

Consider the following:
4 took generic dungeon crawler and made it into one of the most impactful designs in cRPG of its era. The setting as such managed to exists until early 00s, with continous games being released

It eschewed all the tedious virtue grinding in favor of interesting puzzles, the game actually finally feels like a cRPG instead of the stats being pretty much meaningless, the combat controls much better and is less frequent, the NPCs are a bit more fleshed out than 4's hollow RUNE/MANTRA dispensers, and also balance - you can actually get your shit pushed in fairly easily in 5.

As I said, they have basically nothing to say in 4.
>Did you see how hollow 5 becomes without previous experience of Britannia?
While retaining cursory knowledge of where specific cities and other locations were (cutting down on early exploration) and seeing them in a more developed manner was cute, it definitely wasn't a dealbreaker.

>> No.5085153

>>5085145
Every NPC in 4 has half a dozen responses. It was a major step up from 2 or 3 where they only had a single sentence.
Do you think having your ingrained virtues twisted beyond recognition wasn't a big deal either?

Starting in 4 by visiting all the towns and talking to everybody isn't a huge time investment and gives you a far greater appreciation of the series than directly jumping into the sequels. Maxing out the virtues, collecting stones etc is skippable filler.

Wizardry is rather different with a fixed dungeon and a party instead of single characters. Ultima 1 dungeons are more Rogue like.
U1 doesn't really take a lot of effort. You can do everything possible in a single day.

2 is an unfortunate case of the creator being unable to realize his intentions. There were some nice ideas but the implementation is terrible. It also got completely retconned in the later games that you shouldn't even play it for references.

3 is alright but not very remarkable.

I don't think a guide changes anything in Ultima 1.
Build gold and HP by staying on floor 1 in the dungeons.
Buy an aircar.
Max your stats by exploring the various wonders in the overworld.
Buy the ladder spells to quickly complete the dungeon quests.
Kill the jester and free the princess.
Buy a shuttle and become space ace.
Enter the time machine and kill Mondain.

Use a guide for 2 if you absolutely have to play it. That game is next to impossible to figure out.

>> No.5093748

Underworld 2 is a direct sequel to Black Gate. It makes most sense to play it as part of the series.
Underworld 1 on the other hand is relatively detached and works well on its own.

Read the manual, don't non hostiles creatures and rotate your saves.
Your strength determines the difficulty. The higher it is, the more you can carry and the easier you learn the important combat skills. The game can be beaten with minimum strength but requires more backtracking and planning.
Most of the non-combat, non-magic skills are irrelevant.

Acrobat, at least a few points in it, is useful as it reduces falling damage.
Repair can be useful for stuff Shak doesn't want to repair or simply to kill time while waiting for him to repair things.
Charisma and appraise don't matter because there aren't enough people to trade with and you can easily get goods to trade.
Track is pointless because enemies aren't hidden.
Traps does nothing.
Picklock can be useful but most locks have a key and you get the unlock spell later on. Not to mention you can bash every pickable lock.
Swimming becomes pointless once you get water walk and before that you can get by well enough without the skill.
Stealth is pointless, you don't want to avoid enemies.
