What's your favorite stuff, /vr/? Pixel, early 3D, vector, whatever. Thread inspired by Metal Slader Glory. I just played through thanks to the translation patch and am blown away by what they achieved artistically.

I've learned to like everything if it looks good. Pixel art, blocky models, Dreamcast-tier models.
Dragon Ball Hyper Dimension is a beautiful game as are Tobal 1, Threads of Fates, Chrono Cross, Virtua Fighter 1, 2 and 3, Garou, Street Fighter 3, Dr Slump, Golden Axe...

It's easier to say what I don't like: games with no defined style. Tekken 1 being one of the worst offenders. Or indie crap.
Or how the styles have been reduced to stupid bastardizations.

Now pixel art is remembered just as NES games, SNES RPGs or Capcom arcade games, but we had plenty of different styles in retro games. Yet indies can only produce this weird pixelated games with modern effects and fucked up clashing resolutions.
Blocky models became just untextured models or Square FF games. But indies can only shit memepoly games, with untextured models and modern shading.

They used clay models for some monsters, for others they photographed various toys (like Pinky being based on a dinosaur toy) then drew over them.
Some sprites were entirely new, or adapted from other graphical sources, most famous being Cacodemon traced from Astral Juggernauts head.

You have to realize that this is NOT the case when it comes to PC-98 games. Almost all of the best-selling, biggest-budget titles at the time had porn in them, even if it wasn't the primary focus. So if you want high quality, you're going to have to get over your squeamishness. Or just stick to Falcom games, I guess.
