I'm surprised the mods haven't nuked this yet. That said, man was SW2 a bummer. The shooting felt great, the mobility felt great, the melee felt great, and even the fundamental loot shooter idea isn't necessarily a terrible one. But the ARPG shit was stunningly fucking tedious. Searching through hundreds of gems to find which set of boring "+0.5% fire damage" would max out DPS on every weapon and then fighting enemies that have big fuckin paragraphs of resistances, weaknesses, and eventually immunities you need to read so you can juggle around your 9 weapons trying to find the one that will actually hurt them got real fucking annoying real fucking quick. When I eventually played RUINER and Dying Light, the realization that they essentially did was SW2 tried to so much better only deepened my disappointment.

If ever there was a game that deserved an extra year or two to actually think about what they were trying to do, it's that. What a bummer.

Oh, and by the way, by carefully reading manual and story texts, I FINALLY realized what the plot of Episode 4 of Doom is. I've seen a lot of people confused about this, but Episode 4 takes place on Earth, with Doomguy busting the FIST demon invasion on Earth. He kills a Spiderdemon leading it, everyone is happy. You fight some more in space afterwards.
Then, according to Doom 2 manual, Doomguy quits the military and *retires* for a couple months before the SECOND invasion comes the very moment when you get home back to Earth.

I've seen a lot of people confused thinking that Doom 2 picks up directly after events of Doom 1, but it appears to be not the case.

Most other retro fps scenes are dead, and /doom/ became pretty mod-focused pretty early on. So I dunno what there is to say.
Gloom had a pretty impressive texture-rendered defender clone mini game... But that just makes me wonder how to do the same thing in gzdoom... Could you make a separate save file for the high score list?

Awful sequel. Don't play it, play the 2013 game instead. Or the 1997 original.

Shadow Warrior 2 is basically a really cutrate Borderlands clone wearing Shadow Warrior 2013's flayed skin. Weapons are sort of better (aside from the mind-numbingly slow and incremental upgrade tokens), but monsters are dumbed down a lot, level design is non-existent (they say it's procedurally generated, but it's not really), and the writing and characters are really fucking bad, also taking a big shit on what the previous game actually did right in those aspects.
I can't for the life of me understand why you would go from a crafted singleplayer campaign with linear level progression, to a Borderlands clone/abortion with the same 10 levels repeated endlessly for what's like a 60 hour game. What the fuck makes you go that route? As a great man once said: "What were they THINKING?"

Personally regarding SW13 a s a 7.5/10 game, I'd say that SW2 is a 4.5/10 game. Not the worst in the world, it has some merits, but it's such a huge step down and has so many serious flaws I could never recommend it to anyone.

I really liked the swordplay, the shotguns, the Skeletor machinegun, the grenade launcher, the Carl Gustav rocket launcher, and shit like the chainsaw and the beam weapons. The weapons were mostly better.
But on a fundamental level, the game is just substandard.
If they ever do another Shadow Warrior game, I really hope they just retcon this game as like, a fever dream or something.

I mean it's like a pleb-filter to this point, i know sometimes the game it's so beautifully punishing with the enemy placement and all this stuff, but come on. If you don't play it like Doom and instead you crouch, jump, take cover, shoot before aim, use alt-fire etc. you're already doing great. Not even the difficulty it's the same if compared to Doom, even at the easiest one you'll die easily if you're willing to tank in this game. but I fucked up and accidentally recorded it in normal PRBoom+ so it doesn't have one. Sorry about that.

For a speedmap, it's an interesting structure. The other maps I've seen have been more traditionally linear maps, so having a Dead Simple style arena that opens up is a really interesting choice. The stealth teleports around the level are also interesting but a little weird because I don't really see what they serve that a normal walkway couldn't, but I guess they're there to look cool. It's a pretty easy map; the archies spawning in the arena of corpses is a classic move, but there only being two and having so much rocket ammo means that they were killed as quickly as everything else was.

Visually, the map is really pretty with a lot of good detailing. It's a very nice looking, very competent map with tried and true ideas, but there's such an abundance of ammo and health that there isn't much to sweat about. Also, the starting zombieman gibfest was hilarious.

The only form of bump mapping the Morrowind engine supports is EMBM, which works on just reflections instead of diffuse surfaces. It's the same deal for Gamecube and Wii games, hence why you only see bump mapping applied to water, metal and armor.

As it stands, there are shotgunner replacements that don't drop shotguns. The monsters drop whatever they dropped in their original games.

However, I am going to add a cvar called mm_dropdefault so that whenever it's enabled, a monster will have the usual drop for what it's replacing.

Post-game thoughts:
It doesn't seem like it's really appropriate for me to review this map because this doesn't seem like a map that's intended to be played. I realize that a 100 minute limit means that maps are pretty much gonna be proofs of concepts rather than a fleshed out normal play experience, but this feels like it's less of a "proof of concept" and more of "an experiment."

Having each room be the same structure but different floor types is a little charming, but the actual fights themselves are really not very fun to play because it's just a random clump of enemies in a big open space to circle-strafe around in (or in the case of the arachnotrons, not run around in but instead hide in the hallway) with only enough ammo on the floor for one weapon to use. Having pain elementals in the rocket room to spawn lost souls that can catch a point blank rocket is interesting, but that's about it.

It just isn't very fun to play because there isn't very much happening. But, again, that may not be the point, seeing that you said yourself that you're playing with silent teleporters. Hopefully you can put them to use somewhere else.

He's manly, macho, confident, powerful, wisecracking and funny, but also self-centered, kind of a meathead, and a bit of an asshole. He's not a complex character, but he has personality.
He's an endearing parody of classic action movie heroes, being both funny, but also genuinely cool in some ways, as well as sympathetic; alien bastards stealing our chicks is a serious problem which he is dedicated to solving, as I play, I'm invested in this plot point, even if there's little narrative and it's just for flavoring.

And this is good because though there's many levels which are a bit silly or just generic action, some levels are serious, and even quite dark and grim, especially the darker lit ones with a gloomy tune, and featuring captured women, begging for death. Duke Nukem himself is the shining golden beacon of comedic relief to all this (but not TOO comedic), and is an excellent juxtaposition for the game's more dark and serious moments, in a way, I want to say he is what lets the game achieve it's "sweet and sour flavor".
When it's just him and the Overlord, having their showdown, Duke grimly announces his intent to "Rip off his head and shit down his neck." A threatening taunt before a battle, Duke has plenty of one-liners to bring for combat, but this one is different. As Duke defeats the Overlord, you seem him tear the Overlord's head off, then take off his gear, unzip his pants, sit down on the creature's neck stump, and take out a newspaper, as he whistles his theme tune.
It was not just some smack talking or empty words, he said that, he meant it, and he goes through with it, because he is full of bravado and capability, and will go through extreme lengths to humiliate and disrespect his worst enemies. It's hilarious, and it's absolutely badass.

I map as I go, it's down to personal preference but pre-planning stuff just bores me; I build big and like to surprise myself with where the map goes rather than having a rigid plan. I'm a Build mapper rather than a Doom mapper so things are a little different but nowadays I try and focus on having one unique thing for a level to rotate around.

Ultimately it's down to experience; I've been doing it for nearly 2 decades now but some of the stuff Doom mappers turn out detail and layout-wise turn my hair white and make me hate my own stuff.

the best thing to do is just do it, open that editor and put on your favourite album and build what comes to mind. don't feel obligated to release stuff (but honestly don't get your hopes up for lots of attention either, do it because you want to enjoy doing it) If it is a Doom map and you want to release it, don't bother with here or Zdoom forums, post it on Doomworld since that seems to get the most people to check it out.

Dusk, Cthon and Amid Evil are pretty good.

Tower of Guns, Immortal Redneck and Rogue Shooter are basically retro FPS as roguelikes - first two are inspired by Doom and Quake, and RS is inspired by Wolf3D and Duke.

No, I was just testing stuff. I played through DK&DC expansion and finally realized that fat monsters in small corridors was what annoyed me in vanilla Hexen as well. A little bit, but there's a bunch of recommendations for stuff that's well suited for how it plays.

E4M3 in Ultimate Doom is almost impossible to play because that level starts with you having a dozen shotguns pointed at you from behind a hidden wall, and you have really nowhere to run but into the arms of more shotgunners. You can sort of work something out if you immediately throw yourself down to that ledge on the left, but you'll probably have some new holes in you to patch up.
Suspended In Dusk plays well, lots of things to use as cover. There's a few pretty mean encounters in there though, hope you like HD's particularly cruel interpretation of the Arch-Vile.
Brutul's map pack seems to work quite decently, according to some.
DTWID and D2TWID would probably be pretty solid.
