Mage is a very peculiar experience. On one hand, it allows you to play the game without concerning yourself with melee at all. On the other hand, the starting mage's gun is fucking broken beyond belief, and allows for a casual faceroll through like 95 percent of both the main game and its addon on the highest difficulty, with other weapons and artifacts being used only like once on a blue moon. This leads to the game devolving to basically an adventure game about labyrinths and traps, with monsters being no more than parts of those traps, and the combat being purely about proper movement and evasion, rather than scoring hits.

It is a very unusual experience when you play it that way, weird but quite satisfying in its own manner.

The other two classes seem to be way more difficult. Especially cleric. You need to do melee, you need to actually use mana-consuming weaponry, you actually have the necessity to use artifacts once in a while as well. But it doesn't have this weird nondescript purity of the mage's playthrough to it. Like, you really have this feel of, like, "this is something else", like, exoticity or something.

To put it in a slightly different way, I guess, Fighter and Cleric are more traditionally dungeoncrawl-ish. They require you to collect consumables and treasure, since those are valuable resources you have to use in order to gain the opportunities to proceed further. Mage, however, requires only a fraction of the overall resources the game throws at him and is, like, 90% self-sufficient. So, for him, the game shifts heavily towards puzzles, traps and just finding the damn exit, to a basically a very unusual game in an adventure format, with combat almost amounting to something between a mini-game of sorts and a continuation of ingame puzzles.

So, to answer >>5076069's question, I guess, Cleric gives you the most complete experience, while Mage gives you the most unique one.

(Well, if mages were realistic)
If you put a warrior and a mage separately into an identical cave.
The warrior really would have to survive, it would be a matter of life and death for him, especially with stronger monsters.
While a mage would just carelessly sweep the monsters away with his magic and casually stroll through the place. Well, unless it's like a DnD type of mages or something, you know, the kinds of mages that instead of mana have limited spell uses per day.

Cool. Played through, and it was pretty fun. Goading infighting is pretty prevalent here. The single texture throughout was at least well chosen, and worked with the verticle light strips that broke it up. Better than STARTAN.
Only issues I noticed that were missed were that the elevator out of the final pit is untagged, and there is a single untextured wall above where there two Barons of Hell are. If you have any time left over you or I could fix those in under a minute.

It's not even about causing ARMAGEDDON MUA-HA-HA. The gun in question is effectively a pea-shooter. However, it possesses a very specific combination of qualities, that make it a very, very broken pea-shooter, and, consequently, the mage's playthrough - a cheesefest.

The demo is pretty long because I just kept starting over. A chainsaw and infight oriented map is an interesting idea, but both of those require a good amount of luck with pain chances and enemy behavior. But because there so little health available, there's very little room for error, so it seems like bad luck can end a run - trying to chainsaw a caco while it's infighting can still end up with it turning around and blasting you, costing you a ton of health through what's essentially no fault of your own because that same strategy could work in another run by lucking out on the pain chance draw.
The starting pinky rush is blood-pumping, but then needing to swing around the chainsaw for a bunch of spectres at the top of a staircase is just kinda tedious.
The big atrium with the cyberdemon is a real fuckin mess because there's no cover to deal with the arch-vile and all the chaingunners once you hop down and there's no way to escape back to where you came from, so the only way I was able to handle it was by just hoping the archie would come down to the dropoff and I'd be able to blindly fire at it with autoaim until it died. From there, it's a matter of hoping the chaingunners get enough people pissed to kill them all, because they're all out of autoaim range and trying to actively organize infighting seems to be suicide because there's nowhere to hide.
The only time I got to fight the cyber felt like the result of a lot of lucky draws falling into place. I'm open to the idea that I could be trash, but I just didn't really have fun trying to interpret this map.

Yeah. And that pea-shooter actually may have two explanations!
Either it's a wand that draws "nature mana" from the enviroment, and the spell in the wand is so basic that the gathered mana is enough.
Or the spell takes so little mana that it drains less mana from the mage, than he can regenerate.

I've played M2 and M3 a combined total of two dozen times from start to finish, but I've probably only done two full playthroughs of M1. I can recall every Infinity terminal by heart and most of the Durandal terminals as well, but not much for M1.

I was toying with that idea. Because I got the moveset planned like this:

Press attack: Do a normal jab, hits a few times
Charge it for a bit: Harder jab, strikes more, ends with some kinda shockwave for even more range
Tap it rapidly: jab rapidly, less damage per strike and overheats over time

Well i think the most fun yet simple idea that comes to mind is either what you thought off in the first post being a large charged swipe that i imagine would do a fair bit of knockback and dammage or maybe like a straight attack where he pushes the entire staff like a spear into whatever hes aiming at that can pierce enemies who find themselves in rows and possibly bounce himself of surfaces it colides with like hit a wall and be knock backed a bit or aim it at you're feet and pogo off for some extra height.

To tell you the truth, I really was struggling to come up with ones I liked by that point.
There's like 8 maps in Doom 2 which I really like a lot, but then I realized I had to really stop and think about what the other two would be, basically pondering which of them which were "the most ok".
I suppose I'd also say Courtyard and Gotcha! for 9 and 10. I kind of like them, but I don't love them, like I do say, Bagel Of Deletion, or Spirit World.

E2 is the best hands-down. Every level in that episode is so much fun to roam around in. The secret level kind of sucks but that's pretty much it. The insane Bates/Shining motel level with 15 secrets absolutely takes the cake.

piggybacking off this post, I worked this handy rar in the particular scenario somebody like me would only be interested in the D2 SSG sounds alone.


one minor alteration made to DSDBOPN, I did away with the one-second-long silence portion at the start.

also gain output on both DSDSHTGN files was slightly increased. you'll wonder why there are two of them; the alt variant simply includes the file 'qk_wpn_shotgun_shot_tail_rnd_04' for reverb effect.

also, akin to per kristian's rework of the classic SSG, for both files I simply slapped on top this sound file named 'qk_wpn_shotgun_shot_shutter' to give them a light starting thud.

The heartbeat bug (cannot play more than 15 levels deathless) that was present in the original mac titles has finally been fixed. There was also the aforementioned move to SDL2. Changes to controls including raw mouse input and setting mouse actions such as scroll up and down being assignable. Classic OpenGL renderer is now gone. Software mode can now have OpenGL acceleration.

That being said, sound is currently broken on windows and (before it was fixed in github) macos version refused to open.

GZDoom Builder is better if you want to make levels specifically for GZDoom, with GZDoom features.

new to doom in general, only played the latest game+hyped for doom eternal.
I'm playing back to saturn x in gzdoom running the smooth mod. currently on level 9.
I like the game a lot so far. looks and feels a big deal like the newer games in some regards (doom eternal mostly as far as looks go) except you move around faster and you don't have mods for the guns. it's also very difficult in certain sections but rings a bell with the new doom. I like that I can tell what's what.

one complaint I have though is that some of the enemies' sounds are a little silly and some of them are a bit dumb AI wise compared to the new game but of course that's to be expected as this ones a lot older. I'll be checking out other maps once I finish these. glad I found this thread, I like the art.

As you imply, there isn't much to the map. The first archvile ambush was good and disorienting because there's just so many enemies at first glance, but it ends up being nothing special because once you murk all the zombiemen the archie is easily dispatched, and the mancubuses (mancubi? mancubodes?) don't really mean much either because of the cover and the plasma. Cyber fight was a wash because there's nothing to do except pop in and out the one wall of cover you have, and the rocket moves so slow there's no way you'd get hit by it. Second archie fight was a valiant idea of having it show up around a bunch of corpses, but I ended up lucking out and having him revive a pinky instead a mancubus so I dispatched him pretty quick.

Also, I've been so conditioned to instinctively not get easy-looking megaspheres that I end up choosing to die than run and get it. Similar goes for the super shotty in the empty room.

been giving ioquake3 a go. playing on hardcore. let me just say, I'm genuinely impressed by just how much the game devolves into absolute garbage by the q3dm16 comes up.

the last five maps in the game are complete shit. it's like they decided they needed to take control away from the player by spamming jump pads every ten or so inches. which needless to say is always fun because there's railguns everywhere, jump pads overlooking the pits, and holes literally everywhere you go.

q3dm17 is fun for a while I guess, but 16, 18 and 19 give me testicular torsion.

Ah. Your playthrough was fun to watch. Map is a tad broken, but easily fixed. Dunno if I have any time left though. It'd probably be too close.
The whole map went through too many revisions to be solid by the time I hit the limit, but I might revise some of the traps to use in other maps.

The more I replay Willits' levels from Quake, the more I question the extent of involvement of Theresa Chasar in their creation. Necropolis, Grisly Grotto and Underearth in particular. It's hard to not like caco.
I don't think they're too fragile though, it's not like you can one-shot them with the rocket launcher or SSG. They're not flying Barons (ergo, HP Blimps), but it's the kind of monster where you need to deal with him sooner rather than later, because you can't just mow him down with little effort, like low tier mooks, and he can reach you in places most other monsters cannot.

This is what he actually intended to do. He wanted to create a meme modpack being the most aesthetically offensive. He said he doesn't even play this, he plays wads with Smooth Doom without texture filtering. It started as a joke, like "oh look I just loaded 50 mods together", then he put this pack on moddb, and there people started liking it giving a good rating and positive comments, so went deeper and started started making changes - rewriting code for the mods, improving animations and creating PBR materials. I don't know if it is still a joke or he legitimately thinks it is a good thing to work on.

I expect a small revival when DukeGDX and its easy multiplayer drops.
But to be honest, what the build community needs right now to expand is some sort of Doom builder-like level editor. The old one's fine if you know your shit and put some time into understanding how it works, but Doom Builder is so damn easy to use even a kid can make a few decent levels quite easily just by picking it up and trying stuff out. Build games need something like that to bring in more people.
