Absolutely amazing. The atmosphere is what makes it great, like the dynamic music that changes with progress, and the levels are extremely varied, from moody bloody temples to open floating platforms under a weirdly colored sky. Plus shooting spells is fun. I was so sad when it was over.

Disruptor. Insomniac's first game and a brilliant original FPS for the PS1 with better graphics than a lot of the Build FPS's on the PC at the time. The draw distance fog gives everything an atmosphere, and the weapons are rad, not to mention the psionics - a lot like Jedi Knight's force powers, there's less of em but nuking a room full of enemies with mind bullets is fun shit. Even the cheesy live action FMVs are likable.

BRAHMA Force: The Assault on Beltlogger 9 (Genkig) - While the main character wears a robotic armor, the game has more to do with first-person shooters. The game highlights your position, the end of the level, and the switches the player must activate in order to go from point A to point B. The player has five weapons to choose from and can also activate a shield against enemy attacks.
Deception III: Dark Delusion (Tecmo) - Place traps to kill your persecutors. It's a real-time game with elements of strategy and role-playing, which allows you to use a system of timing and skill of activating traps through the rooms of a medieval castle as the opponents try to kill you.
Little Big Adventure: Twinsen's Adventure (Adeline) - The player can activate four different behavior modes for Twinsen: Normal, Aggressive, Athletic, and Discreet. The first is used for peaceful exploration and conversations; Aggressive mode allows Twinsen to punch and kick other characters; Athletic mode must be applied when it becomes necessary to run quickly and jump; Discreet effectively puts Twinsen in a stealth mode.
Macross: Do You Remember Love (Scarab) - Hori shmup
Midnight Run (Konami) - Arcade Racer
Monster Rancher Battle Card: Episode II (Tecmo) Card based strategy. Cards are acquired through defeating opponents, and via an in-game shrine where you can use music CDs, PlayStation games, or PC CD-ROMs to make cards.
Motor Toon Grand Prix (SCEJ) - Silly racing. The most significant visual characteristic separating this game from others is its exaggerated use of squash and stretch in the animation of the vehicles, giving an almost jelly-like behavior to the geometry as it is affected by kinetic forces (like centrifugal force when turning at high speeds, or abruptly stopping or accelerating).
Panzer Bandit (Fill In Cafe) - Like Guardian Heroes except much better art.
TearRing Saga - The real Fire Emblem continuation. By Shouzou Kaga, the orignal creator.
I had heaps more but word limits suck

Running High is a JP only futuristic racing game featuring people in mech suits that let them run at insane speeds. You drift around corners by sliding, engage jetpacks for turbo boosts, can punch each other, and also engage a jump attack by keeping a racer in your sights, letting you hurdle over them for a quick speedboost. Interesting mechanics that take some learning, not a huge amount of courses though the aim seems to be to win them all as every character, and some great music. Different enough to check out. Not to be confused with Running Wild, pretty much the same thing with dumb animal characters and less fun.

I'd say the King's Field games and Shadow Tower. King's Field games are open world, more or less, which I found to be pretty amazing for what the PS1 was capable of.

Bishi Bashi Special is a collection of a bunch of mini games. Most of them are fairly similar but they can be quite catchy. I used to love playing those with friends.

Solid tactical JRPGs with a great cast. The first game is only like 10 hours long and is basically a prologue to 2 which is massive and one of the best PS1 rpgs. The collection also has 3 which isn't as great but still a solid title.

Be warned, this game emulates quite poorly and freezes and/or crashes quite a bit. Also no English patch either. So you’ll need moon rune skills.

Muppet Monster Adventure is a very underrated 3D platformer with level design that focuses on exploration similar in scope to Spyro. Really fun and charming especially if you have any nostalgia for the Muppets.

Weirdly enough, Muppets RaceMania is also pretty damn good as well, if you're into kart racers.

I always wondered why they didn't make more games in the Ergheiz series. It definitely was better than most of it's contemporaries in the fighting game genre and that's not even because of the FF7 characters. The fighting game aspect is fluid and controls wonderfully and it runs at 60 FPS so it's perfect in that regard. Plus the Forsaken Dungeon is like the icing on the cake, except the icing is a more ornate and even more delicious cake.

Zen-Nihon Pro Wrestling: Ouja no Kon / 全日本プロレス 王者の魂 aka AJPW: King's Soul

IMO the best wrestling game not only on the PS1 but up to it's released date also on all platforms. Not only in terms of graphics and animations, but it's also a very good sim. But sadly this also was the last game made by Human Entertainment before they went under.

Yeah, Fire Pro Wrestling (or Fire Pro Wrestling G on the PS1) by the same developers was/is more popular, but I prefer King's Soul over it any time, since it had much more depth (and the PS2 games with the same engine as King's Soul - King of Colosseum Red/Green and King of Colosseum II also were the best wrestling titles on the system).

Just look at what garbage wrestling titles were released on the PS1 by other devs. Most of the commercial more successful wrestling games were crap and partially didn't even qualify as Wrestling games, since they merely were beat'em up's with wrestling characters. Somehow western developers don't know how to make good wrestling games. To bad the genre is dead now and only those rubbish games with WWE license get released nowadays.

I had 2 friends to play with a bunch. And a multi tap of course! They used to complain a lot when we'd do 2 player adventurer mode about the AIs cheating with each other or going into 'health mode' where they'd spam collect wumpa fruit. I think my favorite minigames were dragon drop where you shoot gems at the targets for points, space bash with the breakable platforms since you'd get personal island situations going, and whichever ballistics variant had the magnets. Feels awesome when you fire off 4 balls at once.

How you stack crates determines what you get from the crates, ranging from allied buddies to help you stack crates faster and fight dudes, to various weapons (grenades, guns, etc), to mcfucking tanks.

Similar to how we would call Tony Hawk's Pro Skater "Tony Hawk".

WHY DOES THIS GAME NOT EXIST ANYWHERE OUTSIDE THIS POST?
I'm fucking nostalgic/mellow as hell right now and I want to emulate and try to finish probably the first 3D action game I ever played (or remember anyway) and I can't an ISO anywhere for some reason.
While you're helping me find old games, I can't remember the name of one, but it involved picking a faction who had their own kind of vehicle, and their own kind of island fortress, and I remember the objective of the campaign was to pick one faction and play invader on all the other island fortresses. As soon as I see an 'underrated/unknown ps1 thread' this game always fucking pops into my head. It's weird too, since you'd think, being developed by Square that this game would have received so much love and critical acclaim. Yet, it casually sits in a dark room waiting for someone to remember.

Also, and I don't have proof unfortunately, but I remember before 2010, Dewprism (Threads of Fate in JP) was almost on every top list for wanted sequels.

It's shameful. The game really could have been a wonderful series. Not complaining though, since it's definitely my favourite PS1 game.

Loved Azure Dreams, yeah.

Picket's were a complete pain in the arse, really satisfying when you got to a point you could one-shot those fuckers.

iirc the first monster that absolutely wrecked my shit was an Arachne, hated fighting them without having good equipment + high-level monsters.

Was it ever possible to fully complete the monster book? Think I completed one or two of the pages but I don't think I ever managed to fill every entry.

idk why, but the only game I could convince nongamers to play was this one, and they always loved it. Like I never, ever understood why. People who were the cool kids in high school would be over at my house for a class project or something, I'd sperg about videogames, show them the case for chocobo racing, and they'd say fine to trying it once. Two hours later I'm still playing fucking chocobo racing with chad and stacy on my ps1. This game has voodoo powers

I've already posted this in another thread but received no responses. I think this game is one of the most obscure and yet underrated games of the first PlayStation. It plays like your average old school FPS, with ass kicking soundtrack, secrets, satisfying weapons, maze-like levels and plenty of sci-fi landscapes. (go to 3:27 if you want to skip to the gameplay) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ5nkqb7aKU

This is a Tomb Raider ripoff starring the almighty Douk (in fact, there are even a couple of easter eggs that wink towards that popular franchise); don't underestimate it though, it's a real fun game that works on its own. Like i said, plenty of secrets and easter eggs (like the DeLorean from Back to The Future), the astonishing voice acting of Jon St. John for the typical Duke's oneliners, gorgeous level design, plenty of blood and gibs, lots of weapons to carry and so on. Perhaps it's not your loved FPS but trust me, this game is worth playing anyway. There's also "Duke Nukem Land of the Babes", but i think you'll prefer this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lP5dtUaYjOc
