Didn't like it much. The combat was too clunky, and made worse by the fact that you can't even avoid a lot of the encounters with the enemies. Also, the engine was clearly too much for the PS1 hardware, frame rate dips pretty badly at times. These hurt the experience.

Great atmosphere though.

I played it for the first time last year. Holds up pretty well, I actually prefer it to the original Resident Evil. I appreciate the perceived freedom of exploration it gives you. I found the final boss fight with the bizarre religious imagery to be pretty disturbing. Also not necessarily /vr/ but I'm going to play 2 in October, heard nothing but great things.

Pretty much this although a lot of people will still probably come along to bash it anyway. I'll go ahead and make some specific points since people love to refute me

This was perhaps the first game to make very scary use of dynamic lighting - play it in the dark

The sound design of this game is amazing. Playing it with music on or just with the sound off or something diminishes it considerably

Things like the fog and the chasms were ways of dealing with the technical limitations of the medium but they were so, so effective

The nightmarish qualities of this game are much more well realized than any other survival horror game and probably any other horror game.

If the whole waking up after an accident in this altered reality made us question if it was a nightmare or if we were dead, then for there to be a whole WORSE version of the world to shift over to just cranked it up to almost unbearable levels

It's by far and away better than any Resident Evil game on the same system. You can strafe, move while shooting, quick turn, and manipulate the camera in 90% of combat situations. If you stick with it and realize that handgun ammo is fucking everywhere and the auto-aim is very generous you'll get used to the controls pretty quickly.

I got to agree with this especially in regards to the first game. I've never played or seen anything since that matches or even outdoes it really. While I like 2 better because reasons I do think 1 is the scariest in the series. Only thing I disagree with is the music. The music is too good in these games to not listen to while playing. However playing without it on definitely is a good way to experience the games to so it doesn't hurt to do two playthroughs of the game just to try out playing them both ways. What I like about the first more than others is it has a very mysterious and dreamlike aspect to it with its horror.

An artist trick used to get more color or detail out of limited hardware. It usually relies on a CRT and the bleed caused by composite video cables.
Pic related is a really good example. See those vertical lines and dots in the horizon? When displayed over Composite, the color from those lines blends with the color around it, causing a whole new color to be displayed. Genesis games used this trick frequently because of it's limited color palette.

Hot take: Resident Evil will be underwhelming as fuck (as a survival horror series) compared to Silent Hill and the only games I consider must plays are on their own merits are REmake, 4, and 2.

REmake is one of the most smartly designed and paced survival horror games of all time and is the only RE game that can even touch SH in terms of classiness and atmosphere, though the story itself is a lot less intriguing than anything to come out of SH it makes up for it by being perfectly paced and designed in terms of encounters and resource distribution.

2 is a fun action-adventure romp that rewards smart play, avoiding enemies, and resource management. However, there's way too many god damn loading screens considering the amount of back-tracking you do and the back-tracking doesn't really change much up compared to SH. (which often had you backtrack through the Other World version of the same area) The controls feel archaic in comparison to SH1, the spook factor just isn't there, and the static completely fixed cameras and pre-rendered art style aren't even in the same league as SH's amazing developer baked camera sequences and smartly designed and textured low poly 3d environments.

Resident Evil 4 literally isn't even Survival Horror and you might not like it if you go in expecting it to deliver the spooks. What it is, however, is one of the most well-designed and ludicrously satisfying single player shooters ever designed. If you're a fan of high stakes action games like the Souls series, Platinum games, the original Half-Life or any number of heavily designed (but still gameplay centric) action games you'll love it. Just don't go in expecting a classy and thought provoking survival horror game.

>If you're a fan of high stakes action games like the Souls series, Platinum games, the original Half-Life
As a matter of fact I am, I never expected RE to be the same as SH, I just want to see what the series is about and why it spawned so many games and movies.
I tried some RE game before on a friends ps3 and it seemed very clunky and badly designed at the time, but I decided not to judge the whole series after that one experience hence why I want to start from the very first.
How connected are the games among themselves?
Can I just skip from one to the other, or is it necessary to play the others to understand what the hell is going on?

The stories of the games are honestly Army of Darkness tier and having them spoiled for you via YouTube video or what have you won't really tarnish the experience too much.

That being said, 2 occurs as a direct consequence of the events in 1 so if you play REmake you'll be up to speed on 2. 4 is tangentially related to the rest of the games but most heavily features characters from 2 as fan service.

Resident Evil really isn't Silent Hill though, play REmake for the spooks/atmosphere and 2 + 4 for the fun gameplay. 2 will still feel clunky compared to Silent Hill but the game designers were aware of the limitations of the control scheme they were using and designed the game so that it could easily be played in a fair manner using it. REmake isn't as fluid as Silent Hill still, but by that point the development team had designing games around the limitations they had down to a fine fucking art.

I didn't mean the game's music, I meant additional music. The game's whole sound environment is great but it's deliberately silent most of the time as all good horror games are. Back in the day, people would break this silence with their own music to lessen the horror and it works well. Other people just can't take silence period and fill it up with anything, e.g. podcasts and that's a great way to have Silent Hill ruined for you. Save it for grinding games.

Probably. Tekken 3's movies were still the gold standard at the time from a technical point of view, but Silent Hill's movies were unusual because they attempted to convey character with body language and longer cuts, so they were kind of groundbreaking in that regard. They were very well directed and rendered.

That hack breaks more games than it fixes, and it causes massive problems with all the rest.
If you don't want wobbling models then don't play PS1 games. Or play them on a SD CRT where the issue isn't anywhere near as noticeable.

>> No.5089258

>>5089232
I legitimately don't even know. Seems like dhalia runs a cult in town that wants to summon the beast or something, and needs alessa/Cheryl to do it. Cheryl and Alessa are the same person..or Cheryl is actually Alessas daughter? Kaufman was also working with the cult for a while, supplying them with drugs but has a change of heart when he realizes how nutty it all is. I can't tell how real and involved really is. Was she brought back to possess Cheryl's body or is she really there and really behind it all.
I don't know, I'm probably way off on a lot of stuff but I still enjoyed it.

silent hill was a weird game where it actually gave you melee weapons decent enough to let you be able to just open fire on anything during the last section of the game because of how much ammo you've collected at that point

I thought RE was bad with how much ammo it throws at you, but SH throws it at you without you ever really needing it outside of bosses

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
DON'T use W10's own virtual disc app! Don't install under C:\Program Files\ !
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.

Follow the SH2 widescreen fix site's instructions to the teeth, and you should be fine.
For 3 & 4, check the Guide.

If you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
If SH3 runs like shit even on a strong PC, check and lower the Rendering Resolution setting.

SH2-4 support DirectInput controllers. If you wanna use Xbox or PS4 gamepads, check the guide or use a Joy2Key programs.
There's OK emu-settings for SH1 in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Try the PGXP emulator for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

Play in release order. Never play below Normal difficulties. Replaying is very recommended.
Turn down Brightness, crank up volume. Turn OFF flashlight for STEALTH!
