Sup dudes. First time posting here.

Is Ebay the best place to buy old consoles and games? Might try to get my hands on a SNES and I'm scared to get a box of broken shit

>> No.5063847

>>5063819

Ebay is the standard way and typically more expensive. You can sometimes get good deals there too but it is rare. The real shit where sometimes people score deals is garage sales and flea markets etc- but this way is a lot more work. On the other hand this thrill of the hunt is what many collectors love so much.
However, ebay prices start to influence the prices there too, but good deals still are much more likely there.

There used to be huge disparities in prices between highstreet, ebay and personal/flea markets. Then a load of people started raiding the latter for cheap deals, Pat even had a series titled "flea market madness". The term "ebay prices" used to be a phrase for the people who ended up buying off ebay. However even is not a bad place to buy now as the market evened out.

>> No.5064042

There is no "best" place to buy old vidya stuff because there are so many different factors at play like the game, how rare it is, where it's located, who's selling it, etc. eBay is a good place to look, but so are locally owned and operated game stores in your area, flea markets, garage sales, thrift stores, etc.

The best advice I can give you is to just look in as many places as you can.

Dude, I'm gonna tell you about pricecharting.com and famevaluenow.com Just look there.

Ebay has no risk, if you get shit, you get a refund. Ebay bends over backwards to side with buyers and sellers can't afford bad feedback.

While, we're at it, realize retro prices are dumb as fuck and there are flashcarts like sd2snes, everdrive 64 etc. Look up stoneagegamer.com or krikzz website where you can buy them. Even the most expensive flash cart is often way cheaper than getting 3-4 expensive games and you literally have them all with flash carts.

Also FYI, if you hook retro consoles to modern tvs you'll have less than ideal results. Either get an old crt or buy consoles that output hdmi or learn how to hook them up to modern displays with upscallers. retrorgb has a shitload of info on getting good video on modern displays as does the youtuber mylifeingaming.

>> No.5064105

For something as common as a SNES, your local Craigslist equivalent or BST groups on Facebook will probably get you a better deal with an amount of patience directly related to the population. eBay is easy though and you do get better buyer protections.

There was another one I went to that's a bit far away and only open on weekends but at least they were willing to throw in a game with just the purchase of the SNES, I didn't need to buy another game.

>>5063819
For most things ebay is generally the best bet. You're not likely to get great deals, but if you know what you're doing and be patient, you can get a lot of stuff for relatively low prices.

Keep in mind that fleamarkets and in-person stores require a lot of time and dedication to travel around, rummage through shit, and MAYBE find stuff you're interested in. But even then, most of the time these guys will price their stuff equal to or higher than ebay anyway. So you might as well just stay home and get stuff off ebay easily.

As for worrying about broken stuff, ebay is your best bet. Their customer protection means that if a seller tries to pull a fast one on you, you're protected. There have been several times where a seller has tried to fuck me over by pawning off broken electronics as used/working, and every time I've filed a complaint I've gotten a refund AND didn't even have to return the stuff. One time I ended up essentially getting 4 free dreamcast controllers and 2 free VMUs in this way. I would've returned them if ebay told me to, but they didn't. And that particular seller was a scumbag, so fuck him.

couple years ago I got my 20" OEV202 PVMeme off ebay and it only cost me $60 shipped. Every once in a while you get lucky, and in this case the medical supply place liquidating their old shit just listed it as "endoscopy monitor". So it didn't appear under the typical search terms that everyone was looking at, and I got it for a steal.

Nowadays that doesn't happen though. Now everyone is aware of how valuable PVMs are to a niche audience and so every endoscopy monitor or whatever else will have PVM RGB RETRO GAMING GAMES CRT in the listing title and a price tag of half a grand.

When I buy from America I have to pay like $25 shipping (I live in Canada) which makes using ebay almost worthless since a lot of sellers are from America. What I do now is look for Vietnamese sellers. Their games (so far) have always been authentic (I have always opened them and checked). They sell games like $5 less then the price on price charting or what people pay for, and there is no fucking shipping fees.

That's 75+12.50 to purchase it. You can't go based off the base auction price when the auction is still 6 days out (nobody smart bids for stuff until the very end).

Now, that SNES seems to be in good condition and isn't disgusting or yellowed, it has all the cords, two controllers, and SMW with it. So maybe paying 82.5 dollarydoos isn't too bad. Still too expensive for my blood. I paid like 30 bucks shipped for a super famicom a couple years back instead.

Buy online and who gives a fuck if someone with horrible business sense has to close their doors. The less retro stores in your area will mean more games at places like garage sales, flea markets, pawn shops etc. Our shit tier retro store closed 6 months ago and it's never been easier to find retro in the wild here at decent prices except for back in the early 2000s.

Nothing beats finding good shit for dirt cheap at a yard sale, but barring that, yes, eBay is your best option for buying online.

Pro tip: even if sellers don't have a "Make an offer" option available on their items, send them an offer via private message. The only reason people list things for sale is because they want them gone, and 90% of people I message are willing to give me at least a small discount off the listed price solely because they want to make cash. I frequently manage to widdle people down to 25 or 50% off their listing price just by asking them. Be your own best advocate and don't be afraid to haggle.

It's going to knock out several games you'll want and you can get a nice box for your shelf. Be sure to bid within the last 15-30 seconds of the auction and make sure it is several dollars over what the last person has bid if you want a chance. There's a high chance you'll be outbid within the last 5 seconds of the auction but it is fun to try to grab decent lots and if you have nothing this is a pretty good set if the price doesn't get out of hand. If you're patient you can find a console lot for a decent price just learn how to bid on auctions and don't bid early or else you'll drive the price up for everyone.

>> No.5064710

>>5064708
Also if you get into bidding don't make your decision on what it is worth last minute. Know what you're going to pay for something and plug it in at the end and see if you're able to win with it. - LA
- NYC
- rural/suburban Japan (Tokyo prices are no better than eBay because the Tokyo stores have caught on to us western tourists)

Alright my dudes. OP here. Been searching about a bit. Here are my options:

Retro store #1: Kind of a regional chain retro store. Seems the typical skeezy rip off shop. I saw they were selling a copy of Mario party 5 for $35.00, which is more than I paid for it in 2007 at Best Buy. SNES there is $65.00 for the console/cables/controller

Retro store #2: Seem more like a small mom/pop style video game store. Facebook and google reviews are much higher than option 1. $75.00 for the console/cables/controller.

That seems comparable to what I'm seeing on ebay. I'm sure I could wait around and snag one for cheaper on there, but I'm not going to be that beat up about $20.
