>see people discussing disk rot on this board
>think it's all a meme, never had it happen before even once in my life, think it must be due to people storing them badly
>went to play DMC3 today
>look at bottom of disk
>big black spot
Guys, I'm scared. Should I sell off my collection of CD/DVD games and cash out while I still can? Are these things all just going to devour themselves one day?

No.

As long as you store them correctly 99% of them will be fine.

Only a few sega cd games really had an issue.

I have over 500 musical cds,and tons of ps2,ps1,dvds and none have disc rot.
Just don't be a retard. Theyre safer than floppys

As I said in the other thread, poor storage conditions are the single biggest killer of vintage electronics and media.

Yes, you should throw out your entire PS1 collection and buy a PS1 Classic. It's smaller! Better preorder before your discs are swiss cheese.

What are your kind doing to get disc rot? Especially on something as new as PS2 discs?

My hair metal CDs from the 80s are all still flawless. My PS1 and DC and PS2 games are all flawless.

The only things I can think of that can cause this is:
>smoking household
>humid warm air
>mold
Surely you must fit one of these categories? In which case:
>smoking
stop, it’s bad for you anyway, literal cancer.
>humid
dehumidifier.
>mold
that stuff is leathal, it’ll kill you dead, especially if it’s the black stuff, get it removed professionally.

The only problem I’ve had with discs is when buying used games from GameStop, the top layer picture side of the disc where the data layer is is scratched and makes parts of the game unplayable.

>> No.5061854

>>5061842
And the thing with the GameStop discs isn’t because of rot but because the previous owner didn’t take care of their disc and used it as a cup coaster or something.

Only game I've seen with rot is the GCN copy of Metal Gear Solid, which people have told me isn't rot, just a label issue. The disc still reads fine, but I'd rather not put it in a Wii because that drive will rub on the label. I'm told this is an issue with all GCN copies of this game and they call it Snake Skin on ebay.

that is a printing error. I had the same thing on my copy.

Just store your disks properly and you'll be fine.

>> No.5061959

Legit disc rot can happen, it's caused by some kind of contaminant getting trapped inside the disc. Sony are the fucking masters of pressing discs but some infinitesimal percentage of even Sony pressed discs will have contamination. It's not a fucking time bomb though, if it was going to happen it probably already would have happened for 20th century discs.

>> No.5061969

>>5061925
Yeah that’s not rot, that is poor pressing during manufacturing.

That's not disk rot. It's a specific printing error with this game. I have it too and the disk is perfect.

I've noticed a few of my CDs made in the 80s to be slightly thicker than later discs with the data layer being closer to the middle.

Were. The stuff they make today is beyond garbage.

I had this on a croc for saturn that I bought with an unknown past. It wasn't wrinkled up like the mg disc on here, just flaked off in pinhole like areas. It's like the foil just flaked away from the plastic part. Again, no idea of it's past as I bought it used. I think it's a safe bet that some games or some pressing plants/batches might have issues where most don't.

Wouldn't it be possible to re-apply a shiny layer? The data is in the plastic, not behind it.
