I managed to 1CC (with no deaths at all, even) SNES Gradius III in about a week, and I don't play shmups regularly. It isn't a difficult game, especially if you're smart about which powerups you use, e.g. the shield that shrinks you down is mandatory. If you want to play a hard game then play the original arcade version. The SNES port is toned down in difficulty considerably.

For 45 minutes you'll think I'm shitting you and having a giggle, and then that final boss will punch you in the throat like the Fist of North Star.

inb4 some videogame wizard saying no SP games are hard, you just need to memorize everything lmao xD

>> No.5059229

most early arcade games, and any arcade game is relatively hard, designed to give you a game over in a minute or twi

>> No.5059284

The correct answer if we only consider a single loop is Tatsujin Ou. Even credit fed this game is harder than 99.99% of what's usually considered a hard game around these circles. And while YMMV it's a good game too.
If we take into account second loops then it's more debatable due to some other games such as by Cave and Psikyo.
I can only assume OP is ignorant though he may be trolling, since Gradius III for the SNES isn't bad at all as has been pointed out previously, not even in its hidden hardest difficulty. If he meant the arcade original but he picked a bad pic, then it's up there for sure but the one I mentioned is harder as well as some others.

>>5058229
wiz 4 shouldnt even be considered a game. just a massive troll.

>> No.5059296

>>5059284
To add to this, that game's fifth stage might be the single hardest stage in a game ever (for first loops in particular)

Gonna tag on since I don't want to kill another thread and this is tangentially related.

What's the deal with Gradius? Is getting gud more about memorizing the stages and obstacles? Example, even stage 1 you have that place where the screen stops between two erupting volcanoes, how do you dodge the rocks? Is it just finding a good spot to set or is there something I'm missing.

I'm like shmups, I'm shit tier at them but I want to get better. I've been playing more randomized bullet hell modern ones so I'm a little confused as to the method of getting gud here.

>> No.5059718

>>5059693
You learn the stages and think of a strategy to beat them. A lot of it is getting the right weapon for the job and positioning your options right. In the case of the volcanos, get laser because it has a very steady stream and cover yourself from the rocks by positioning the options above or below you. I usually hide at the top left corner, others do it differently. You can just destroy the rocks as they are coming out too. Not much different from a harder bullet hell game.

>> No.5059748

>>5058542

I know the shrink is necessary. do you also use turbo laser or something else?

>> No.5059763

>>5059718
Cool, thanks for the tip, gonna fire it up in half an hour or so. I've been using wave gun, I'll try laser and see how it deals with the rocks.

>> No.5059778

>>5059763
Wait wave gun? Which Gradius are you playing? Also, don't stress about recovering from later checkpoints and aim for a no death run, a lot of Gradius checkpoints are bullshit hard to recover from.

>> No.5059792

>>5059778
Dude I messed up, I was thinking salamander, was playing both of them. Gradius I was using double since it let me shoot above me, laser works better, got through the volcano with no problem. Sorry, as soon as I fired up the nes I realized wave gun was salamander/life force and not Gradius.

>> No.5059815

>>5059792
Right yeah double is situational, laser should be your main

>> No.5059978

>>5059748
I used Missile, Double, C. Laser, F. Option, Reduce, Full Barrier. Once you have all of your options, laser, and Reduce, just keep your power-up selection on the empty last slot (Full Barrier) and use it as soon as you get hit to get your full Reduce back. Reset whenever you die since the game punishes you so much for dying anyway.

>> No.5059993

>>5059763
yeah haha thanks I will try using the f. option. I use the reset code, of course there is a reset code. The c. laser is cool but I guess I just get paranoid that it's slower than the other weapons.

I'm actually close to beating it, I think. I cam get to that boss rush part without dying but I haven't made it through yet

>> No.5060000

>>5059993
Yeah, the boss rush is the hardest part. Just try to get into it with a full shield and all your powerups sorted out.

>> No.5060012

does "literally unfinishable due to game-breaking bugs" count as difficulty? because if so then like the top 2-3 hundred most difficult titles are gonna be NES shovelware
