I played this game again for the first time in 25 years.
Holy shit, now I understand why people like Mario so much. I didn't remember it being this good, and it's a game from 1985, this shit is crazy.
How did they tune up those controls and physics like that? This is beyond anything else that was on either home systems OR arcades.

SMB1 is just insanely good man. It was fun back then and it's fun now. I also like the original arcade Mario Bros a lot.

I'm gonna play that when I'm done with SMB1, currently on world 7.

Yeah but I mean, arcade Mario Bros. was still standard in terms of controls. It had some creative stuff, but Super Mario Bros. is just another universe.

It's a real showcase for the Famicom hardware but they did have a lot of that physics shit in the original Mario Bros - which I suspect was partially cloned from Joust

The controls and physics on SMB are nothing like Arcade Mario Bros though.
The Joust clone was Balloon Fight, not Mario Bros.

I recall reading that Super Mario Bros' swimming controls were retooled from Balloon Fight.

Seems like it, but water levels are maybe the least impressive in terms of actual controls and physics in SMB.
