Freedoom is two megawads that have been being worked on for 15-20 years with the goal to make Doom 1 and 2 completely free by replacing all the non-shareware graphics and sprites. The maps have always been similar to Episode 1-3 levels with a little Doom 2 influence but have gone more thematic and connecting in recent years.

The thing with the shareware disc though, was that all of the id shooters from Wolf 3D up to the full version of Quake were included on the disc in an encrypted form, powered by some system called Test-Drive. So I added a cvar that lets you disable Quake's gibbing system in SMM if you don't want it.

Makes it easier for characters that deal high burst damage to get ammo drops out of Quake enemies.

It's ok.
Some of the levels are kind of neat, and they all kind of mesh together seamlessly from start to finish, which is a nice touch that gives you kind of an adventure feeling, but a lot of the maps are also really uninspired and bland, with very boring visuals.
It was a while since I played it, granted, but I remember a lot of gray concrete.

It could need a texture pack or a, 'redux', if you will.

Yeah, they're a bit too sturdy to gib normally unless you wear them down a bunch with smaller guns then bring out the rockets instead of the normal zero-sum two rocket kill, but they're the only other enemy in id1 that drops ammo. More of a thing in mods like Quoth with all the different grunt types who drop goodies like rockets and health shards (but most of them like the rocketeers, commandos and pyros can still eat one or two direct rockets and still not gib on death so it's still just the grunts and enforcers you're missing out on).

The room looks pretty nice in my opinion but it still feels like it's missing something, it feels kind of bare still. That's it. I'm sick of all this "Master Assembly" bullshit that's going on in the DRLA system right now. Pistols deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that. I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine Pistol in America for 2,400,000 credits and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even pierce slabs of solid steel with my Pistol. American smiths spend years working on a single Pistol and case harden it up to a million times to produce the finest gun known to mankind. Pistols are thrice as accurate as automatic weapons and thrice as reliable for that matter too. Anything a rifle can shoot through, a pistol can get through better. I'm pretty sure a pistol could easily bisect an imp with full health with a center mass shot. Ever wonder why hell never managed to conquer the US? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Dualgunners and their pistols of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the pistols first because their killing power was feared and respected. So what am I saying? Pistols are simply the best gun that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the DRLA system. Here is the stat block I propose for Pistols:

You must change your way of playing. That's not Doom, you are thin but now armless: use the weapons wisely, especially TNTs. You're probably right in regard of knowing the map beforehand, but that's a thing you manage to internalize with time. I'm not saying you must grind hours for a single level, just start with little steps, for example: choose the 2nd difficulty at first, hell, even in the very first one you'll get plenty of damage if you're willing to tank, so be careful. Then save often (i'm not saying to savescum, just do it like, everytime you pick up a key or something). It's surely a game that you gotta know beforehand if you want to truly enjoy it without dying continously but trust me, it pays off so damn well.

It claims it's a "mod" in its '99 website, but doesn't specify what of. It might be a DOOM wad, I don't know. It was basically a hybrid of FPS with Educational vidya to teach people how to use a 3D engineering tool called think3 or something.


I remember getting a disc of it as a gift from a friend of the family back in the day. I was too scared of the monkey dude in the cover so I could only play it in short bursts.

Besides the grafics obviously, there's a focus on managing your health and ammo long-term because you can't just glory kill it all back (so don't go around picking up large medkits when you're at 95% health). Armor is a bigger deal. Enemies are more evenly spaced around the maps, sometimes being behind trap doors, and their attacks are harder to dodge since some of them have hitscan. This is balanced out by monster infighting being easy to pull off, plus you're never locked in an arena with a bunch of enemies.

Doom 4 For Doom (and MetaDoom to an extent) are mods that make the gameplay a bit closer to D44m.

Can somebody help me with mapping for quoth? The biobox(just a themed explosive crate) entities do not appear in the level for some reason when I use the builtin quoth .fgd(trenchbroom user). Other entities from quoth like plasma gun and modified grunts appear in the game fine.
I tried to fix it by manually loading the .fgd from latest quoth and it does work, but entity previews are gone when I do so(pic related) which makes placing items well difficult
I could just use the builtin for mapping and manually load the new one for testing but its kinda tedious, anyone knows how to fix these previews?

Well the first draft of the Quake video guide is done, I tried to up the production values a little bit, there is still work to do, but I wanted to get some opinions before going forward.

This brings me to exhibit b. Marathon was a great game in terms of exploration and mapping, but that is the factor that made it similar to Strife, Rebel Moon Rising, Daikatana, and a lot of similar shooters. It was a game that a lot of people played once, had a beer, and moved on with only the kvlt staying back and playing it over and over. Doom had a moshpit formula that made it so easy and fun to jump into at any given time and slam through some levels, og or fanmade wad. In addition, Id's opensource model made it so easy and flexible for anyone to take it and have a new game in hours. I mean fucking Chex cereal picked it up and made Chex Quest. The only other game to do that was Duke with the Tacobell fps, but that was after money and contracts. Id was the perfect company in the 90s at making games that were easy and flexible to jump into. Honestly that's why Unreal fell off the boat too deep to salvage and Duke fucked itself over. Bungie is just now starting to open up a little more.

Typos aside, I'd recommend you cut down on the launcher/injector stuff, but maybe that's just because I'm a Linuxfag and I find it more convenient to make an alias for what I want.

I guess you have to decide who your target audience is. If it's complete brainlets, then infodumping like that will scare them away, even if it's really easy shit. If it's ``normal`` people, it might be fine, because it wasn't that long.

I would actually advice them to just download the .paks alone from the internet, telling them to get the original installer and do that is cumbersome and unnecessary. But I guess it's an option.
