Do a 3D accelerated version. On modern hardware (fast pentium + 3DFX)
you probably wouldn't even need to be clever -- you could just draw the
entire level and get reasonable speed. With a touch of effort, it should
easily lock at 60 fps (well, there are some issues with DOOM's 35 hz
timebase...). The biggest issues would probably be the non-power of two
texture sizes and the walls composed of multiple textures.

I don't have a real good guess at how many people are going to be
playing with this, but if significant projects are undertaken, it would
be cool to see a level of community cooperation. I know that most early
projects are going to be rough hacks done in isolation, but I would be
very pleased to see a coordinated 'net release of an improved, backwards
compatable version of DOOM on multiple platforms next year.

Using freelook in a level not designed with it in mind breaks things. You can trigger switches you were never intended to be able to trigger, target more selectively than the vanilla autoaim would allow, and can see and target monsters above and below that were intended to be a surprise, etc. You're bypassing restrictions that were used knowingly and very deliberately by some level designers.

If you're fine with that then go nuts, but pretending people who don't want that stuff in their game don't have a perfectly valid point is asshattery.

It shouldn't MATTER to anyone, but if you're bypassing limitations that were integrated in to the design of a level then you are 'playing it wrong' by definition.

(Where do these appear by the way).

Many levels made nowdays even assume mouselook anyway. It makes the controls better, do you play in the tiny resolution as well? "Breaking the level" would be more jumping over things you were not meant to or couching to dodge projectiles.

In the early releases of doom, there was not even strafing. Check the logs.

Really depends on the palette used, doom palette is pretty limited so unless you work in graphics with PNG (everyone pretty much does this nowdays) color changing looks pretty bad. I had to do quite a bit of editing to get Purgatori to look decent, but if the colors are set too dark it looks horrible.

It's not really a big issue for most Doom skins since the majority of marine skins have a vest or suit that's colored instead of whole skintone. Plus most people play Doom to rip and tear, not to play dress up, so I don't really spend too much time working on skins nobody will really use.

That version I changed the death animation and also added rotations to it. Otherwise it is pretty much identical aside from a ghost effect I put on gib.

I didn't make the skins from scratch but ported them with 3D model viewers. Purgatori was created for Quake 2 and Lacrimosa is from a defunct ... sort of League of Legends like game called Land of Chaos Online.

Also, I gotta say that even though I'm not the fondest of WDI the maps are excellent. Too many doors for convenient deathmatches but whatever, I wouldn't mind trying some on them.

GZDoom uses a slightly different file format than Skulltag/Zandronum, I don't understand the reasoning but since I never really used GZDoom at all until I decided to try Reelism thanks to the /vr/ threads I never tested it with the engine. Maybe I'll get around to fixing them and making sure they display right someday.

Oh yeah, note that not every wad will allow for custom skins, both with GZDoom and in Zandronum. Reelism, Who Dun It, and Shotgun Frenzy all fail to load any of the skins in my skin folder.

Quick question, is it normal that Zandronum looks like shit when compared to GZDoom?
