What are some retro game soundtracks that were inspired by or blatantly ripped off actual songs?

>> No.5039768

A lot of songs in the Mother series are based on American pop/rock songs, these in particular

everyone's always telling me the music for all 3 Streets of Rage games were complete rip-offs, but I've never actually heard the stuff Koshiro stole from. Someone got really angry last time I asked

>complete rip-offs
1 and 2 yes. 3's OST was completely original and ahead of its time and actually inspired electronic music producers decades later.

Are you implying the Mario theme was ripped off from another song?

OP said "inspired or blatantly ripped off", this similarity is completely coincidental (confirmed in an interview where Mitsuda revealed he had never heard of Astley).

I wanna know if the piano from the first song in BG is a sample as well, because it definitely sounds like one.

Heh, I've always found 3's music to range from unimpressive to maddening. Can't account for taste though I guess. Thanks a lot for the link! Somehow never managed to find that myself.

A lot of those are similar but I wouldn't say they're direct rip offs. 1 is a common chord progression with a common stabbing rhythm, and the melody during 6 is actually closer to "Layla" by Clapton as far as feel goes(the chord change is more like the song it's being compared to, though). A lot of the music does sound almost identical but a lot of music from that era had similarities; roots in old funk, jazz and techno, dance or groove heavy, syncopation, newer equipment allowed more complex sequencing and sampling, interpolation of other's music. Even if the dude intentionally borrowed a lot of those ideas from those other tracks it's exactly what other people were doing during that time. I think that's one of the things that makes the music fit so well. The thing that really sticks out about these though is that they sounds very similar to multiple tracks by the same people(Black Box, Royal House), but I hear things in those tracks that I know come directly from other music not in that video. It actually makes me want to look more into it myself, stuff like that's always interested me. Like how Afrika Bambaataa can take ideas from Kraftwerk and turn out one of the hottest dance songs in the 80s.
