> DOOM with a dark ambient soundtrack and lightning "effects"
This shit can genuinely get scary when you're walking down a dark room and a demon screams at you.
No regrets for giving it a chance desu

It's by far the best 90s port

This game and Doom 64 completely and utterly butcher the atmosphere and controls of the original, 64 especially.

Haven't played it but

This is some good stuff.

>> No.5037971

this is the only version I played, I beat it so many times, lugged 2 heavy bedroom crts into the living room for death matches with friends, I loved it so much. was it really different from the original?

I have it on good authority that you can run the original on an actual toaster so why not find out for yourself?

too much on my backlog

Definitely give this a playthrough once a year or so. This version is fantastic

Near-perfect port. My only gripe was that the game relied exclusively on passwords.

Monster Condo is the scariest Doom map even in 2018. FACT.

First off, while I respect that your backlog is enormous, I believe that Doom deserves your utmost attention if you have not played it simply because of the massive influence it has had on gaming.

Second off, to answer your original question: The original Doom on DOS had a medley of fast-paced rock and slower moody songs. I highly recommend listening to the soundtrack, as while Bobby Prince definitely cribbed from contemporary metal songs, he also had some absolutely incredible original compositions.

The 3DO version of the game also has a CD audio version of the soundtrack that's arguably the best rendition of it.

>> No.5039025

>>5038998
Different anon but I strongly encourage you to either mod the 3DO track in or just listen to it. The 3DO port is true garbage

Funny story the 3DO track was made because the poor programmer was only given the Atari Jag port and less than ten months to program it, so with the limitations given she called a friend up for him and his band to do a cover of the soundtrack for her.

I agree with this guy. I've been fast tracking some games to the front of the line, for context and fun. DOOM, Diablo1/2, fallout 1/2, and a few others got preferred treatment because there's just no way games that have been universally praised for so long are going to suck. Also, most of my backlog is made up of console specific jrpgs, pc western rpgs and strategy games that are going to take me years to get through. DOOM will take you one day to finish, and it will be fun the whole time.

Doom 64 was good for doing something different. Everyone found quake 64 to be disappointment because it was a straight up port of PC quake.

The PS1 version isn't that bad, Mr. High-Standards. The N64 version is a different game altogether.

ohhh there are more changes but all for the worse. It sometimes runs at a butty smooth 5 fps and will dip to 1 if to much is on the screen and both button delay and hit detection is off.

What is it with people obsessing over their "backlog"?

Why get hung up on things you haven't done yet (and may never get to), when you can just prioritise better, get rid of all your fluff and random aquisitions, and focus on a smaller collection of better games?

What I've done is run through all my games, test played each long enough to know if I like it or not, and trimmed the fat.
I like it, it gets a spot on the shelf. I don't, it get's sold off (or thrown out).
For me, 20 minutes is enough to tell if I like a game or not. Because of a game "takes at LEAST 30 hours to get good" then that fucking game can go rot in hell for all i care. I'm too good to throw away 30 hoirs of my life on something bad, waiting for it to "get good" and so are you, you dolt.

Also, it's OG Doom we're talking about for the love of shit. Fucking get to it you noob.

Now.
Because you're 25 years late to the party.

So I really want to love the PSX version of DOOM, but two things throw me off. One - the frame rate is not the best at times, and secondly the controls (especially with the original controller) are not the best. My left thumb is always cramping after a single level. Suggestions?

64 is its own thing, and a better Doom 3 than the actual D3
I mean, sure you want more of the same NOW, but back then people wanted something fresh.

This is true, but the "friend" was actually the owner of the studio that developed the poor. Utter idiot when it came to game development (he thought porting Doom to 3DO would be a simple cut and paste job), but a good musician.

Rebecca Heineman wasn't even given the Jag port by the studio, she had to hit id up for something, literally anything, and Carmack was like "ahh shit, here have this"

Its a massively inferior port, but with one of the greatest horror scores ever to grace a videogame which changes the atmosphere of the game in a huge way.

Its not the best way to play doom, but its an experience if you have not played OG doom for a decade or so and want to play it a different way.

Yeah, just look up PlayStation Doom TC. They've even recreated the levels that were cut in the style of PlayStation Doom, plus No Rest for the Living.

I have the OG doom PSX copy right beside me. You wouldnt suggest playing it on on my PSX but instead going straight for the PC expatiation?

>> No.5040224

>>5040161
It was a great console port for the time, and I love how the levels are darker and have colored lighting, plus that soundtrack is amazing (prefer most of the sound effects too) but honestly, the TC captures all that very closely, so I'd say it's the better option.

Maybe play through the actual PlayStation version at least once, just to see where the TC might be different.

I've played doom on pretty much every console except PC. the ps1 version being the one I played the most. if the OG doom isnt some wholy knew experience then it can fuck itself to the bottom of the pile. I've got games I've been wanting to play since first seeing in mags decades ago and only now got access to. I' m gonna make a dent in that shit before playing a game that I played for probably 1,000 hours on the ps1 especially it's going to be virtually the same experience on pc

This is exactly why i like Quake 64. It does the original theme a lot more justice than the fast paced gameplay does. Shame about the input lag though.
