Hard choice between Sonic and RoS. Both are among the best on the system, so.

Golden Axe/Streets of Rage.
6-PAK was the best multicart.

>> No.5035384

I dunno man it depends. I'll pick columns for the fact that you never get tired of it. But if I were to choose one game right now it'd be either Sonic or Golden Axe. Super Hang On is a fine game as well but the original mode is too drawn out, it's not good enough for that level of time to put into it. If I were a kid again I would make sure to finally beat it.

>> No.5037609

How the fuck? Were some of the games downgraded in some way for space? Did this use a special, larger cart? Am I just seriously underestimating the storage capacity of a regular Genesis cartridge?

Genesis rom sizes vary wildly from a few kilobytes to almost 4. I'll get the exact sizes in about 15 mins

Columns - 128KB
Golden Axe - 512KB
Streets of Rage - 512KB
Revenge of Shinobi - 512KB
Sonic the Hedgehod - 512KB
Super Hang-On - 512KB

All told 2688KB. This however is the uncompressed ROM including blank data not used by the game. Fitting all of them on a single cart is easy, but if you were to trim out the blank data it would be trivial.

>> No.5037646

>>5037643
Also, even though there likely isn't a limit to how much data a genesis cart can hold, the genesis itself only has 4MB of RAM, which is why Sonic & Knuckles wont work with certain games, usually RPGs.

>> No.5037662

>>5037609
While SNES games are usually 256k to a few megabytes, lots of genesis are laughably small by comparison. I think a big reason is genesis games only had 512 colours while the SNES have over 30,000. Audio I'd imagine (thinking aloud here) as well is less on the MD since it's synthesized in real time like keeping a musical score. So the price of cartridge space wasn't prohibitive for genesis. It's not unusual for one games size to be 1/6th or or even 1/16th compared to another game's size though all the way up to current gen.

Also Nintendo would rather kill themselves than release 6 of their best games on the same platform later in its lifetime. Sega did a couple of mega games/6-pak type of things.

>While SNES games are usually 256k to a few megabytes, lots of genesis are laughably small by comparison
22 Genesis games are 4MB,
49 are 3MB
233 are 2MB
328 are 1MB
241 are 512KB
28 are 256KB
12 are 128KB
Game Genie is 32KB
Some outliers are between 512-1024 and 1024-2048

Let's see a similar breakdown for SNES games.

I had a look around and couldn't find numbers like that, it probably is fairly similar for the SNES after all though SNES is a bit bigger overall. It would be helpful if you gave the link for where you got those numbers.

>> No.5038824

>>5038418
The real reason Genesis ROM sizes are smaller on average is because the console had games released for 2 years before the SNES even came out.

Games released toward the end of the generation like Toy Story have less animation on SNES, presumably due to its less compressible sprite format and far heavier reliance on sampled instruments.

I'd call those "collections" as oppose to multicarts, the only difference being a multicart to me has several different games as oppose to several in the same series.
Doesn't change the fact that Game and Watch Gallery games are fucking great. Allstars too, obviously.
