One of the best videogames of all time (if not THE best) according to many, winner of several game of the year awards in an already amazing year for gaming, is a first person shooter with platforming sections and very loose controls and physics that are not suited for such a thing. And don't even get me started on all the other dumb shit in this game, like how it relies on savescumming to get through, or how most of the time it has you fighting the dull bullet sponge soldiers that always know exactly where you are and are dead accurate even with grenades, or also the entirety of XEN. I'm convinced people were simply blown away by the graphics and immersion to even care about the gameplay, I mean all I heard about it back in its day was that the graphics were so good it would never run on my computer. And I'll admit it IS quite immersive, and not just because playing the game is probably about as unpleasant as actually being in gordon's shoes.

>yet another "This popular retro game actually sucks ass!" thread
Having actually been alive back then, I know why it was popular. Because it WASN'T a rambo-fest adrenaline shooter like every other fucking FPS out there at the time. It wasn't Doom, it wasn't Unreal, it wasn't Quake. It wasn't a game about grabbing the biggest gun and making the biggest explosion possible, it was a FPS about staying alive against the world. Before everyone realized the AI for the grunts could be cheesed by ramboing them, the fact the AI actually moved and worked as a team to take you down was highly praised. Beat the hell out of every other FPS where the enemy just keeps moving towards you while shooting after spotting you.

I remember the fun people had in playing around with the game. Luring scientists into tripmines, pushing security guards into deathtraps, shoving people into an elevator, hitting the switch, then throwing a grenade in as it leaves, good times.
>whining about the movement/controls in Half-Life
Yeah, it was so goddamn horrible people made tons of single player and multiplayer mods for it while leaving the movement/controls intact. How about you make a thread whining about how wall-jumping in Super Metroid is hard?

>complaining that the controls and physics are bad for what the game wants you to do
>when HL1 uses what is essentially stock quake 1 controls physics

If you're having problems with Quake 1's buttery smooth controls and physics you're the one that's fucking up, not the game. People can do shit like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rejCKeshZNI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH5Gk69vIhw with HL1's "very loose controls and physics". Git gud.

Yeah typical "if you don't like the game it means you're bad at it" response.
The big difference between quake and HL is that quake is actually aware what its controls and physics are good for, i.e. running around killing dudes rather than jumping around on thin ledges over bottomless pits and exciting air duct crawling action

I don't know how but this is somewhat true. I think it's due to being shorter and focusing on being an action shooter instead of slowly unravelling a story and plot. You already know what's happening so here's what you don't see plus more aliens to shoot. Great expansion

It doesn't seem that good now because game released after copied everything from it. This game in 1998 featured ridable monorails, interactive knobs, structures, ingame cutscenes where the characters move, interaction with terminals and objects, throwable objects with physics, coloured lighting and destruction. Compare that to quake 2.

Basically any other well-made mod is better than the base game.

We like to speak of Half-Life being great in general.

>> No.5029837

The reason everyone bought Halflife was for all of its mods. Picking up Halflife let you play free mods like Day of Defeat and Counter Strike that were individually better than retail games. Fapping over the single player (especially 2's) is just journo shills. No actual people still care about it, everything good about the single player are tech demo type stuff that every game does now.

The controls and physics are fine, you just suck.

It's okay, but it's literally Cawadoodie of the late 90s and early 00s, a cinematic tube shooter that made a minor nudge forward in the genre's standards of accessibility, sense of visual spectacle and storytelling.

This exactly. I saw OP being such a retard and naturally assumed underage or troll. Honestly platforming is great in half life, it's just most people aren't used to any real platforming in fps games. If he honestly thinks the platforming is bad, I feel sorry for him as one of the most enjoyable activities is learning conc jumping maps on Team Fortress (Classic). There are still servers up and while sparsely populated for the most part, you can still find expert conc jumpers who don't mind showing a newbie the ropes.

Yeah, Half-Life has better player movement and platforming than a lot of games these days.
I mean you could probably add things like mounting/climbing ledges and shit like that to the engine, and it'd work just fine.

I remember when this game first came out. What drew me in was the fact that it merged a compelling story with polygon FPS gameplay. That combination was unbelievable for it's time. Very immersive. I used to play it without the enemies on just to walk around and observe the scenery.

Goldeneye already was out for a year before the original Half-Life and already proved that a FPS that wasn't a "rambo-fest" could get extremely high sales.

Half-Life was a milestone for FPS storytelling by combining scripted sequences with continuous level design. But when somebody tries to say it changed the direction of the FPS industry, well that's wrong. Goldeneye already did that.

>> No.5036682

The last section in the game is beyond atrocious. I'm also not sure where the notion that this game is 'complex' is coming from. It's pretty straightforward and not all that difficult to master.

I don't know if i'd say it's better overall, but god damn OpFor is definitely amazing. The only complaint i have about it is that it's a tad too lengthy. The way i like to view it is that Goldeneye was a breakout point that brought the fps genre further into the light than it had ever been, and then Half-life gave it a swift, hard kick in the ass to REALLY get it out there. it was a one-two combo that complimented each other.

"Afraid of Monsters" was an amazing, if sometimes totally bullshit, single-player horror mod.

"Heart of Darkness" is one of the cheesiest and best mods every released for HL1...literally Apocalypse Now by way of Resident Evil by way of Peter Jackson. A war epic for our time.

"Firearms" was an amazing multiplayer mod, especially with bots.

"Action Half-Life" was also an amazing multiplayer mod, and doing bullet-time in singleplayer was fun as hell.

There was never a game with mods as good as HL1 after it came out, since everything just got way too costly to make. :(
