Try as I might, I just can't get into this game. It turns into a slideshow all of 3 seconds into the game

This has led me to wonder, at what point did game developers finally decide that framerate was actually important? A shit ton of old games through n64 seemed to give exactly zero fucks if 90% of the game felt like garbage

Did it drop frames as well? I recall it was just the infamous SNES slowdown.

Anyways yes whatever it is, it's pretty bad in this game, one of the reasons I hated it. I don't think I'm ever bothering to beat the game again with the fucking weak ass mandatory weapon, ever, it just does not feel very good to play on top of all the bullshit it throws at you.

weren't the majority of SNES games 60fps? they probably cared about 60fps when they were given the power to do it without limiting their own game.

Games with slowdown are still running at 60 fps. Slowdown is an independent problem. There are (generally shovelware) games on the SNES and Genesis with lower framerates, and they feel awful in a different way.

>> No.5021079

Did they decide on it? News to me. After 3rd gen it was all over the place with many tech showcase games running like total shit, Capcom had a lot of stinkers like your pic and Demon's Crest. Then fifth gen completely killed performance in favor of cool screenshots and videos. Thankfully PSP and PS2 ports in Capcom classics collections fix it completely.

Framerate autists are the worst. This one can't even tell the difference between slowdown and framerate.

>> No.5021086

>>5021075
That's a fair point. Slowdowns are bad, worse than bad framerate. I was just playing a Mario 3 romhack and it would have slowdowns and completely fuck up my jumps

>> No.5021212

i don't know, but it is funny. goldeneye would be considered unplayable if it released with that fps today. what is it, like 15-20?

>> No.5021219

>>5021212
on mouse, definitely. anything sub-60fps is awful when it comes to using a mouse
but i think console gamers wouldn't even notice a game being 20fps

but this is more about slowdowns than is it framerate

>> No.5021230

>>5021212
Considered by who? The videogame industry has a huge financial incentive to pretend framerate matters a lot. The very fact that at one point in time they were talking about how amazing fun a game is and then later tell you "that's unplayable, this is fun now" and you still don't notice any flaw with that logic.

You're mixing what stupid nerds think framerate is and why accurate framerate is important for certain genres. It's almost universal that nobody wants to play a 30FPS fighter but it does not mean every genre needs to be 60FPS and it's never for "cinematic" reasons.

>When did framerate become important?

It always was important. Every game would be improved by a minimum stable 60fps. This includes Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts. That game is improved with a stable framerate.

>> No.5021349

Arcade Ghouls n Ghosts has very little slowdown, and slowdown is not the same thing as reduced framerate.

This - I don't know why all these people think OP is talking about Super Ghouls n Ghosts. A little flicker when things get hectic has always been expected. It's called pushing the hardware.

I dont mind the slow down it has become part of the game for me. Speedrunners intentionally avoid those slowdowns and sometimes i found them even useful.
Its not gamebreaking for me.

>> No.5021953

You can fix the slowdown, even on original hardware, with a romhack

Something is very very very wrong. That game doesn't slow down at all.

When everything went 3D

The SNES always had the best exclusives, but most of them ran like shit.
Meanwhile everything on the Genesis ran smooth as butter.

>> No.5024639

The 3D era, because that's the first time when speed and framerate were decoupled. In the 16 bit era people would talk about "slowdown" instead, because that's what happened when the framerate dropped.

modern games got so many problems, that they try to keep modern gamers cool by telling them "we got smooth 60fps/30fps! Our game is well made!"
It's a marketing gimmick. Ocarina of time had 17fps btw. And fps has nothing to do with fun

>> No.5024872

The switch from 60fps to 30fps became the norm in gen 5. Pretty much all the PS1 exclusives run on 30. And its not exclusive to 3D consoles. Most of Neogeo games for example at this point were coming out at 30fps, such a Metal Slug series.

It's always been important in pc fps multiplayer and fighting games for input purposes. People really didnt become autists about it until the PS4 released though
