The 32X could handle Doom, the problems being that you can't fit all the levels or enemy rotations in a 4mb cartridge without some serious compression.
Also the music could have sounded alright if it wasn't rushed out the door.

For the 3DO, I couldn't say how well it could handle even Doom, because the 3DO port of Doom was a super rushed port of the Jaguar port with no optimization applied to it, it could probably have been made to run better.

For Quake, no way in hell that the 32X could ever do Quake, for the 3DO, maybe, if someone like Lobotomy Software got to do it.

I think he's teleported to a crowded area in Deimos and dies.
But everytime you die you respawn with your pistol. And everything you killed respawns as well. Because when someone dies they go to hell... But hell is already where you are.

I figure it's open for interpretation.

The novels rationalized it by having the main character kind of dissolve, numbing completely both physically and mentally, then gradually realizing he exists again, until he arrives at the destination on Deimos.
Falling on his hands and knees, and realizing he's in a physical space/plane again, he resists the temptation to kiss the filthy deckplates and realizes he's completely naked and has none of his stuff; he's completely defenseless. Finding a weapon and carrying the spare magazine between his teeth, the first thing he does is to look for some clothes, so he has pockets to put things in.
So I'm thinking, by that logic, maybe the event where you step on the large teleporter pad and then get surrounded and attacked by demons, is just some kind of brief psychosis you experience as your physical form is moved and remanifested on the other side.

Possibly, there was never any big thought to it, and they maybe just wanted a surprise ending for people who played the Shareware version, to get people to buy the full one to find out what happens next. Thus why I think it can be open to interpretation.

I still got a long ways to go I still need to do all this shit before I get to samson:

Not really a bug, just an oversight in level design. The sector in front of the teleporter is flagged as a secret but it's normally impossible for the player to make contact to trigger it, because they step up to the teleporter's height when they get far enough inside the sector for it to count.

hello /vr/, me and 2 friends had a kind of contest to make a .wad for DOOM in about 2 months and then compare the maps. Now we thought maybe the anons in this thread could try them out and vote for a best map. None of us have any experience with this before, so it might not be the best.

some things to note:
>valborg-map is a very slow map that you should think about how to explore and solve, not a usual doom map. Its more like a puzzle.
>in drope, quite small amounts of ammo was put in the map. So it may be wise to conserve ammo and use chainsaw or pistol in the start.

It's not the only secret like that. E4M3 has a couple of sectors marked as secrets that are occupied by torches so you can't enter them normally, and there's a teleporter marked as a secret in Map27, which you can only trigger if you bypass the teleport linedef entirely. I don't think they were terribly concerned with the intermission screen's numbers during testing, especially given that kills can go over 100% with archvile revives and icon of sin spawns.

No, you can't. That's not how autoaim works. Explosions have infinite vertical height, that is true, but projectiles and hitscans are fully capable of traveling over and under shootable actors and will only autoaim at them if they're visible to the player.

Some things make height checks, some things don't. Secrets are one of the things that do, your feet have to touch the floor of the sector for it to count. You don't take damage when you're in the air over a damaging sector either.

Personally I like the lights. What I /don't/ like is the high res textures and sprites.

I don't think high res textures improve anything. They don't add atmosphere, all they do is do is add detail that's too high for the level geometry to do justice to.

Spirit World is a big ol' fuck you kinda map, the kind that makes you trudge to the store and come back with a copy of "DOOM II Unauthorized Tips and Secrets" so you can figure out how the fuck to get through some of these levels. Or nowdays you just hop on youtube and watch a playthrough.

One thing those sorta levels do help with is showing the player what kind of dumbass tricks work and which ones are easy to overlook or are just plain annoying or unintuitive. It's part of why when I make maps these days I prefer to keep things simple and straightforward.

Look for asymmetrical details in otherwise symmetrical areas. For example, if a room has 3 torches on one side and 4 torches on the other, look where the missing torch would be. Use your automap to check for asymmetry and broken patterns in the map geometry as well.
Also, don't just look at your surroundings, also be listening at all times. If you hear a door open somewhere, head over there as soon as you can to look for secrets. If it's closed by the time you get there, retrace your steps to find out what triggered the door to open. You can also sometimes learn the locations of undiscovered rooms if you hear enemies behind a wall.
Look for conspicuous textures. This doesn't have to mean textures that are slightly different from those surrounding them, it could just be textures that are rarely used. Common textures for hiding secrets include computer panels (although you'll spend a while if you search every one of these), large pentagrams, and large UAC logos.

"Open a command prompt to the folder with your wad: if you have a folder open in the usual windows browser, you can press Alt-D and type in
powershell which opens a command prompt window to the folder you are in.

Then, type out*

prboom-plus.exe -file mywad.wad -record demoformywad.lmp

and you can add other optional arguments at the end if you want to deviate from default settings (iwad, complevel, warp, skill, etc). If you don't enter these, it will default to whatever settings are in your prboom-plus.cfg file, which is usually fine, but just be aware.

After you hit Enter, then it will just record until you quit the program, and your demo will be automatically saved.

To play back the demo just use the -playdemo flag instead of -record in your command line.

*Btw, if you don't set anything up, you will have to enter the full path to prboom-plus.exe instead of just 'prboom-plus.exe'. To make it so you don't have to do this, you have to add your prboom-plus folder to your system's Path variable. The Path variable is just the list of folders that are checked by default for command line stuff.

Open your Search Windows bar, the one in the bottom left of your screen probably. Start typing 'Edit environment variables for your account' and click on it, and it will bring you to a menu with a few settings for your Windows user. Simply click on 'Path' and edit it. It gives a list of all the folders currently in there, so we just need to add our prboom folder: Click 'New' and then click 'Browse...', and then simply navigate to your source port folder and hit OK a few times until you are out. You can also do this for your main WADs folder or texture packs (some wads use external texture packs) so you don't have to type a billion letters into you command prompt everytime.

Bam, now the command prompt for above will work fine, and this is my setup for recording demos and stuff."

To the anon(s) who have recommended the Roland Music things. You're doing HUHs work, you beautiful bastards.

Just booted up vanilla DOOM1 and DOOM2 on crispy-doom with the native MIDI files and cfg loaded properly, and oh my god it's BEAUTIFUL.


You all owe it to your ears to try it out if you haven't already, it sounds gorgeous. Just remember to edit the .cfg file with the proper file extension (if you downloaded ogg, change the flac flags to ogg).

Not sure if that thing about it not working on Windows is current. i'm on Linux, so I can't confirm. Just werks here.
