Fuck doom!

Let's have a thread of the best classic FPS.

Discuss all things about Duke nukem here!

The games,the easter eggs,the ports.

Everything.

Except DNF.

I hate Duke as a character.
His bromentality.
His exposed masculinity.
His narcissism.
His internal rotteness.
His dull one-liners.
This outstanding lack of depth.

I hate Space Balls. It's just a generic sci-fi flick with half of its ideas lifted from Star Wars. The establishing shot drags on way too long, the characters are flat and stereotypical, and the villain's plot makes no sense.

No. I just hate guys like him IRL. So I don't like him, too.
If out of Build Engine games, I'd choose Blood, because it wsa a fair hard game to play through, where after beating the first episode you went from a mindless ketchupfest to a "tactical dynamite dispensation". And its' main character was a cynical darknessful madman, not just an asshole.

Not that guy but I've never been a big fan of Space Balls it's humor hasn't aged nearly as well as Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles or even High Anxiety.

It has it's funny moments, though. That very meta scene where the villains watch the tape of Space Balls to find where the heroes are is priceless.

>> No.501518

Old Build games really were great, but most especially Duke3D and Blood. I loved how inventive the arsenal of weapons you had were; even if some were sort of gimmicky they fit so well with the self parodying atmosphere of the games, (except Blood, which was more serious I think, but not less awesome for it anyway). Best episode was L.A. Meltdown imo, though maybe that has something to do with being 12 or 13 when I played it and the blue movie theatre and strip club (I actually still like it the best anyway even after the soft pixel porn novelty wore off).

Yeah, you can dodge most of the shots from the 2nd and 3rd bosses, but the you can't dodge the chaingun on the first boss. Gotta have that medkit handy.

A few points:

1. My dad introduced me to this game, with the parental settings on, of course. It was a fun step up from DOOM, since things like slopes and overlapping rooms could exist, as well as generally higher-quality sprites. I recently got the game and played through it again, the 4th mission and the Xmas pack. The game is clever and humorous.

2. I wish 3DRealms remembered Duke is supposed to be a parody of macho men instead of trying to play it straight in this oh-so-extreme decade. You could say they still tried but when Duke finishes playing his own game and two reanimated-corpse women ascend after fellating him it seems like it's forgotten the action-movie-parody roots.

3. I played Duke!Zone pack 2 way back in the day, which was just a big compilation of fanmade maps. Since then the CD got scratched and only recently have I been able to download an .iso for the original, unzip the levels and play it with my downloaded DN3D. Most levels are boring, but there's little messages about developers and old websites that give me a bit of nostalgia for the 90's. If you like I can give you guys a .zip of the files as well as a guide to the first 100 levels or so.

I've played Operation Body count. At the time, as a kid, I liked it, but really for its time it's technically speaking below other FPS. The only impressive thing is that you can shoot the windows and look at a sky texture of cityscrappers. Past the sewer levels at the beginning it gets very repetitive too.
