Games with interesting concepts and levels, I remember being quite fascinated by the bizarre landscapes of Unreal, exploring the game was the best part.

Any other games you know of worth exploring?

Evolva had a fantastic concept with its customizable characters but only twelve levels felt like WAY too little to do much with it.

Freedoom 0.8 (not too old I know but it's on an old engine) has some really cool shit. Hidden in Map32, for whatever reason, is a completely destroyed version of Map01, flooded with toxic waste, dead bodies, and so on, that's only accessible with noclip. For some reason, it's completely scripted with level exits, doors, and everything else, just devoid of actual enemies. I fucking love exploring shit like that.

in all the hours I've played 99, 2k4, 3, and new UT, I've never made it past a few hours into Unreal. . . The music and art is great, but I just can't get into it for some reason like I could Half-Life 2 or Turok or a lot of more dynamic fps games.

Freedoom was dynamic as fuck, the newer maps aren't as badtrip as the older ones, but it's worth trying it all.

Turok Evolution (preferably for Gamecube) could be what you're looking for as well, and maybe the Small Soldiers video game for PSX. Also adding an OLD pc shooter called Dracula, it was part of an old engine called Ray Game Designer 2 and was pretty creepy
