This game gets decent ratings but what is there even interesting to do? It's a tiny world where you do the same shit over and over again. And its idea of a challenge is to throw you a hurricane the one time you forget to watch the weather broadcast.

Reviews give it credit for having hundreds of different ways to play through it, yet no one way is any more interesting than another. Whether you forage herbs and fuck bitches, build a massive farm, or be a hikkikomori, you're just running back and forth without any form of thought.

There's something inherently satisfying taking your broken, run down property, and transforming it (and yourself) into a thriving, productive institution. Crawling your way out of the dirt and into a comfy, profitable position.

If it doesn't click for you, then I can't say any of the other Harvest Moons would either.

I could never figure out how to get animals because I wasn't allowed to purchase them due to not have enough food for them, despite a full silo. There was quite a lot of stuff in it though that allowed me to enjoy it event without knowing how to do the main part of the game.

I enjoyed the latest one on 3DS. There's tons of different crops, animals, waifus, festivals. You can decorate your farm/city and force people to move, too. You can level up your crops and animals too. There's actually like goals too, the town restoration, so there's something to do besides make money for no reason

I would like to see something like harvest moon and the sims combined. You start of with a shitty run down shack and a crappy farm and then you build it up. You get to design your own house and have to eat and shit and all that. You could also hire on farmhands to help once you have enough money. Instead of just placing things like the sims you would have to go into town and buy them and bring them back or have them delivered and home improvements would actually take time and effort to do yourself of you could hire people. The game ends if you go bankrupt and your character can get old and die and get a game over if you don't have a heir. You would also have to deal with shit like the government trying to buy your land to build a highway or something.

So many strange and broken mechanics in the SNES version of Harvest Moon.

- You can talk to the girls over and over again and max out their heart ratings in a single day.
- Not having any fencing at all would keep wolves out from pestering your livestock permanently, as the only check the game does is to see if there's any broken fencing. It didn't even need to be enclosed.
- That god damn ranch master rating. You had to put grass EVERYWHERE and have a certain number of crops shipped in some odd multiple or the game wouldn't count it. Same thing with the women. You had to have somewhere between 5 or 6 hearts on everyone. No more, no less.

Also, Harvest Moon doesn't take into account a lot of real problems from real farming. Tending to animals is EXTREMELY messy work, tending to crops is tiresome as all living fuck, blazing sun erryday as you work on open fields, swarms of huge and varied insects (seriously, NEVER underestimate the size of farm spiders), and no internet or vidya (or time for either).

Those "places" would be a vast majority of the world. Even 1st world countries are like that. Take the US for example, as soon as you leave the coastal area's, it immediately turns into Farmland and small towns. This goes for All states, just stay away from major water sources like large lakes or Oceans.

>>503749
>i'm way too used to the niceties of city life.
Dunno about Europe, but in the US, there's not much of a difference. Technology does not disappear as soon as you leave city limit's. Even internet speeds are the same.
>Like i'm not doing anything to leave my mark in this world
Personally, I think owning land, and building a house upon/ working it is the ultimate mark upon history. Outside of being famous (which is a hell of a lot harder than working a farm).
>Also, Harvest Moon doesn't take into account a lot of real problems from real farming. this 100%
>and no internet or vidya (or time for either).
No. internet [in the US] is not only available, but sometimes faster in the country. And although Farming is hard work, a lot of it is automated now days. You also dont have to tend to animals AND crops, you specialize in one area, not both. I'm not sure if you've seen the inside of some farming vehicles or not, but the higher end ones often have TV's built into them. So you basically stop your vidya every five minutes or so to turn around, then go back to your game.

Friends of Mineral Town for the GBA is kind of a remake of the Playstation game without bad loading times, and it plays a lot like the SNES game (I know you said DS, I'm going to assume you can play GBA too). Harvest Moon DS also plays similar but there's a lot of added bullshit mechanics like crop leveling and a bunch of shit you have to do before you can get married.

you were playing back to nature. if your biggest gripe with the game was the loading times, you might be okay with the psn version. there's one loading screen when you boot up a save or i guess when you start a new game, at least on ps3. i would assume it's the same for psp since it loads the data from an iso. personally, i think btn is a little slow in everything from the length of the days to the time it takes to get anywhere to the text speed. like they made the distance to any given location longer to offset how much longer the days are and that just doesn't work. before i bash the game too much, though, i want to say that do still really enjoy it
friends of mineral town for gba is a remake of that one and is smoother from what i've played of it. my biggest complaint would be those chicken noises in the menu. what is that i mean it's like come on
harvest moon 64 is my favorite. i feel that from the snes version it adds just the right amount of depth while maintaining simplicity. most common complaint about this one seems to be that you have to open the menu to access anything in your bag, which causes the game to take a second to reload the environment for whatever area you're in. you can still toss something into your bag quickly, though. for most of what you do it's no big deal, but it lengthens the shipping process

the soundfont they use just ain't that good. also i wish the summer theme were longer than like 30 seconds. i heard it on the soundtrack before playing the game and i thought it was an event song, like the character themes. that town theme is pretty happenin' though

My personal favourite is the Playstation one, Back to Nature. It's basically the same as the SNES HM (different town and characters, though) but it just has more of everything.

There's a pair of GBA remakes of it called Friends of Mineral Town and More Friends of Mineral Town (the former with the same male protag as BtN, the latter with a female one who can romance and marry the bachelors). They have more content than BtN but the sound, graphics and controls are understandably worse. Which is preferable depends on your tastes.

Personally I like "Harvest Moon GB". It's also the most dumbed down version of the game. No dating, no parents, few storms, It's like HM for beginners. A lot of people think it's the most boring one for that reason though.

It (HM:GB) is a good game for a boring Sunday. Just lay on the couch and get your laptop/gameboy/PSP/whatever goin'. You may fall asleep after a few hours.

To be honest, I have no idea, but I enjoyed it a lot back in 2000 or so. It does get kinda repetitive though.

The SNES game is the only one I was ever really able to get into much, even though I have several other newer ones as well.
I also played the Gameboy version a bit, as it was the first one I got legitimately (after having played the SNES version on an emulator), but unfortunately my copy was bugged so that if you turned in the hoe (? or maybe it was sickle... one of the tools anyway) to the gnome to get it upgraded to golden, he'd never give it back or even mention it ever again. IIRC, I tried the same thing on an emulator and found that it worked there, so presumably my copy is either faulty, or it's an issue with the specific version I have (European). In any case, the GB version is just a very simplified version of the SNES game, and not really worth playing if you can play the SNES version instead IMO.

I'll be planting corn for the second time this year (it's part of my graduate school research on crop insects). It's not nearly as simple as watering it everyday and shoving cobs in your knapsack.

I laugh at the thought of paying the villagers extra money to use seed that's been treated with herbicides and insecticides to to protect your yield. Next thing you know, Ray was poisoned from fishing in a nearby water hole. Turns out your chemicals leached into the pond and now you're getting sued and evicted by the village for violating the EPA guidelines. Your wife leaves you and takes the kids.

I remember playing the GBA and then DS (GC clone) game.

>I had sprites working around the clock
>Regenerating plants till I had an orchard
>Effortless
>Spent my time gambling or mining
>Married, bought everything on TV and from the builder
>Only a few animals for cookery completion
>warp crystal replaced the horse
>Love meter made it easy
>Diamond/platinum everything
>Boredom ensued once I hit the bottom of the mine on year 3 and had more money than I knew what to do with.

>Own a flashcart for the SNES
>Decide to play the original Harvest Moon.
>This was when I used to smoke weed almost every other night after work.
>Really fucking high, seems pointless to mention, but it ties into the story.
>Start the game, get most of the dull stuff out of the way.
>"Welcome to our town son! Now go introduce yourself to EVERYONE!"
>Walk around town, hit each house, talk to everyone, the music was grating as all hell.
>Somehow I miss one person, do another lap, and another, and another. CANNOT find the last person to talk to.
>Music seems like it's off key.
>I'm grinding my teeth, getting mad as fuck.
>Shouting at my screen after 15 minutes. "DEAR JESUS! PLEASE FUCKING HELP ME!"
>Shut off the SNES, never played that version again.

It was the weirdest thing too, since I played DOOM, Tribes, intense shmups while high, but Harvest Moon was too much for me. Also, I know I could've shut the music off, but it's an old TV, no remote, and I was pretty much couch locked at that point.
