Which versions of the Ecco games should I play?

>> No.5008871

Sega CD version has extra levels and a couple NatGeo-style cutscenes, in awesome Sega CD quality FMV.
The music by Spencer Nilsen is pretty nice IMO, but some people prefer the Genesis soundtrack. Anyway you can make your own OST if you're emulating the CD version.

>> No.5009503

I prefer the Genesis versions.

>> No.5009538

The 3D Classic version on the 3DS is a great enhanced port. It features 3D parallax backgrounds which look great and you can choose certain emulation settings like which Genesis sound chip to use. All of those M2 developed Sega ports are high quality.

Ecco is one of my favorite games ever and this is my suggestion. The port is incredible whether you use the 3d or not. Personally I like the Genesis sountrack better, though it is the version I played first.

Sega CD version has more levels and is significantly fairer than the Genesis version (when you die you restart at the last barrier glyph you passed). I'm rather fond of Spencer Nilsen's soundtrack, but I absolutely understand why people prefer the Genesis version. Also, if you can read moonrunes the Japanese Mega Drive version has some interesting changes.
Overall, I'd recommend Sega CD for Ecco 1 due to the extra levels. It's a little less cut and dry for Tides of Time, since the only real differences are the soundtrack and the FMV history glyphs, which are pretty cool in their own right.

The PC version.
No one is mentioning it for some reason but it is the best version in terms of features and lets you pick your soundtrack and has saves and junk. It's pretty great.

In what ways?

>> No.5010367

I would almost say the CD version is best because of its added features like CD music and extra levels, but the fact is that the CD version managed to lose a lot of Ecco's original eerie ambience with its newly recorded redbook audio.
It's almost like Spencer Nilsen just smoked a blunt and then composed a bunch of (amazing) new age music that doesn't really fit during key moments of the game.

For example, Ecco eventually gets thrown back in time by the Asterite, and the music score in the Cart version goes from this.. chill "this is my world" to this eerie "holy crap i am in a very dangerous place now.."
While the CD version just plays this chill Jurassic Park like elevator tune.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1hAEWUYmJQ Cart music that plays upon arrival in the past.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N46rEikk4bw CD music that plays upon arrival in the past.

Yeah the CD music sounds nicer, but just doesn't fit the moment.

And there are other moments like this, like at the end when ecco saves his pod this fanfare music plays in the cart version, in the CD version its just another chill new age song that would play in a bathroom so you poop easier.
Completely missing the point of Ecco finally fulfilling his destiny.

I agree. I like the music in the CD version on It's own, but I don't think it fits the game as well as the Genesis does. It's not bad certainly, but the original music suits the game better.

>> No.5010556

Here's the exact moment where Ecco's about to travel through time, notice how the CD version does not evoke any emotion from the player at all with its lack of music before time travel and its relaxed music after.

The Sega CD version, because it offers the most out of any version

Also play Ecco Defender of the Future, it's a wonderful game.

I already said it but seriously ignore everyone else in this thread.
There is a PC version that has every single feature from every other version let's you choose your soundtrack and has a friggin save feature!
Why on earth would you bother with any other version?

The only PC version I've seen is the "enhanced" edition where everything has a hideous filtered look to it. Is there a normal release as well?

Play Genesis if you have hair on your testicles.

You're talking because of the check points? OP will most likely use save states anyway, kek.
Also, CD version has more levels that are action-focused, so it's more manly.
