In 1996 I was in my Saturn years and my biggest title for that year was Doukyuusei ~if~.
Other stuff I was into that year were Princess Maker 2, Tokimeki Memorial, Nonomurabyouin no Hitobito, Can Can Bunny Premiere, Sakura Taisen, and Saturn Bomberman

Wikipedia tells me Langrissser III and Guardian Heroes came out in ’96 and I did like both of those but I don’t remember playing them in 1996. Probably didn’t get them until later.

At home, still exploring the SNES and MD classics (mostly Sega, Rare, Konami and Nintendo stuff, and also Mortal Kombat 3) because no money to buy a PSX.

At my pal's home who had a PSX: Toshinden (a game we played until very late in the console's life), Twisted Metal, International Track & Field, Tekken 2, Doom, Wipeout, etc.

In the arcades: Street Fighter Alpha 2 and all the Sega games. Then Virtua Fighter 3 became my only interest.

I remember when Super Mario 64 was released. Mainstream media, not just gaming media, was praising it as the greatest, most advanced and graphically amazing game ever made. And today, it's... dated, to say the least.

>> No.5008918

>>5008915
>And today, it's... dated, to say the least.
And today it's still regarded as one of the best 3D action games of all time, especially because of the controls and gameplay nuances, rather than the graphics or the novelty of being 3D.

>> No.5008938

>>5008918
But it's certainly NOT praised anymore for the reasons it was back in 96. The graphics haven't aged well at all and the mechanics are very simple and basic. It remains considered as a good game for the same reasons as it's 2D predecessors, it's fun and delivers what it promises to the player spectacularly well.

>mechanics are very simple and basic
Depends on who you ask, but I think Mario 64 has better gameplay mechanics than MANY other 3D platform games, including ones from 6th gen that only let you jump and attack, but have 0 actual physics and momentum.
To this day I still think SM64's controls are pretty good.

>> No.5008951

mario 64 is great BECAUSE of its simplicity, you can cover the entire map collecting 100 coins in a matter of minutes while in something like Odyssey or Sunshine getting all the blue coins is a piece of shit boring chore

Still had the SNES and Genesis. Got a GB pocket for christmas. Games I remember playing the most that year: SMRPG, KSS, DKC3, Sonic 3D Blast, SFA2, CT and MK3.

>SFA2
This makes me nostalgic, it was the last fighting game I remember being genuinely big in arcades.

>> No.5009162

>genesis was mostly retired and only game I recall playing on it in 1996 was lunar 2 (sega cd)
>SNES I still would still replay chrono trigger and BOF2. Rented star ocean.
>PC was mostly playing tie fighter CD (released the previous year but never really stopped playing it), dark forces, MOO2, and played the fuck out of duke nukem
>played a bit of quake but preferred duke
>when diablo came out that derailed all other games for over a month. Nothing but diablo.
>bought daggerfall and ragequit after 2 weeks due to it being an unpolished piece of shit at launch full of game breaking bugs
>Gave knights of xentar another play though now that I got the R18 patch disk

tl;dr

Maybe 5% of my gaming time was on consoles by 1996. PC had almost completely taken over.
