>make one of the most aesthetically pleasing consoles in history
>when selling it in the US they made this giant ugly piece of shit
What the fuck were they thinking?

Looks like a badass piece of 90s sci-fi tech

It's like 5 times the size of the japanese version for literally no reason.

It had to match the size of other common US home electronics of the day like VCRs and laser disc which were massive heavy things.

No it didn't.

It had to be big because thats the way the mohority of amerifats think. They physically want the most for their money even if its not a good product. Just look at american cars and how they were all land barges.

A tiny console would look weak and foppish next to the souped-up VCR look of the NES, so NEC made it much bigger so consumers would look at it and think "that's some beefy tech right there, I bet there's all sorts of fancy guts inside it."

They should've came out with a smaller model later on though, the edgy ads write themselves.

FCC RF shielding reasons, also...

>Has a extra spot for a extra video chip for Super Grafx support, it was never used.
>Could of have 64KB of work ram and 128KB of video ram to make the CD add on just a drive and be cheaper to make, also Neo-Geo style memory cards.
>Needed a YM2610B for lusher sound on top of the HuC6280A.
>Multi tap needed to be built in due to it's larger size, same with all duo models.
>AV outputs in the system itself along side a S-Video port and a 8 pin RGBS only port as well.
>Basic shape, not T shaped and having a over sized cover.

That could of saved the system but instead it flopped.

It's the same width as a 3DO or most VCRs and you can stack it among them. You can load and unload cards and turn it on and off entirely from the edge. They never really marketed it that way but you can install it that way.

VCR's were massive clunky messes. Why in the name of God would you ever want more electronics that way for literally no fucking reason as the Japanese version was tiny? Absolutely nobody fucking liked the size of VCR's, that was never in any way an appeal of those pieces of shit.

>> No.5007819

>>5007816
...I'm not claiming it was part of their appeal, I'm saying that the turbografx matches up with them when you stack them.

I have nostalgia for the SNES design, but SFC design is far superior/nicer to look at for me.

Given the ridiculous costs SuperGrafxs are going for, I'm amazed no one has tried to create an upgrade kit for these.

I always loved the color palette of the TG16. I don't know why
