I think it's one of the best NES games but it's also not exactly essential. If you like NES RPGs then definitely play it first, but 2 is probably the best starting point for the average person. Just don't play Mother 3 first.

Not necessarily defending long loading times, but any developer worth their two cents only puts loading times in out of neccecity, the earthbound devs purposefully made the players wait, when there was no need to. A lot of anons are misunderstanding the issue as well, the issue isn't the amount of time you have to wait, but the fact that the devs are making you wait when it's unnecessary.
Again if this segment were removed nothing would be lost from the game. Earthbound is a great game but it has some flaws, this is one of em
