Since when did the term "hidden gem" mean a mediocre game that's technically playable? I think the Nintendo seal of approval has more merit.

>> No.4999517

"Hidden gem" is a fancy way of saying, "this game didn't get a lot of sales, but I think it's good."
There's better "hidden gems" in the PC freeware section than what console plebs dig up.

I doesn't even mean that anymore. I frequently see retards on /v/ claiming pretty well known games from fifteen years ago are hidden gems because they were like six when they came out and weren't aware of what the video game climate was like at the time.

Around the time that emulation made the entire libraries of mainstream consoles available to everyone and every actual good game was discovered and spread all over the internet thus revealing every actual "hidden gem" for consoles that anybody actually cares about.

>> No.4999850

>Since when did the term "hidden gem" mean a mediocre game that's technically playable?
Probably since the actual hidden gems became so overexposed that to call them "hidden" would be a silly misnomer.

Nowadays, the only games left to even include in such lists are indeed mediocre or even downright terrible with some minor redeeming features.

I think in the 00's (and way before) it meant slightly unknown game that went for a very cheap price.

Sadly, with retro collecting this went out the window when everyone has the internet on a cell phone. It's basically impossible to get anything for cheap, when people think the buy it now option on ebay is the gold standard.

On the flip side, at least now you can really check out a game and see if it's worth the price, price charting is wonderful and many truly unknown games are now know. What I am saying is, it's basically a mixed bag.

They usually hang out on gamefaqs. It's not as bad as it used to be (it was during the time when they couldn't handle ffvii being so popular in the late 00s), but I do see some people say its underrated from time to time and they usually get laughed out of the topic.

PS1, N64, GB(A), NES, etc. all have "hidden gems", aka games that either didn't sell well, didn't get good marketing/publicity, or just didn't get the praise they should've at the time.

For example, i played Dual Hearts on PS2 when i was younger. NOBODY, heard of that game but it was cool Zelda like game with an interesting story.Real fun. Thats a hidden gem. It was ACTUALLY a good game.

Some people pass off hidden gems as games that simply nobody played...not true. Not every game that didn't sell well, market well, etc. is a hidden gem.

I think a great example of a game that was a hidden gem in the early to mid 2000s was Comix Zone on the Sega Genesis. But then it was on every compilation plus almost everyone called it a hidden gem and everyone usually featured it as such, so it really hasn't been a hidden gem in a while.
