Sooo...
Final Fantasy thread?

>> No.4998630

Give me the difiinitive versions of each. I've played 7, 12, 13, and 14 and 15.
14 is my favorite of these though and it's an mmo.
What version of 4 in particular? I know the psp version technically has the most content with interlude and after years, and I like having a "complete" experience.

Never played 4 all that much, but I can tell you this much about definitive versions:

1: Original NES version, or the PS1 version. The GBA version and all future remakes dumbed things down and made it super fucking easy.

2: Remakes. The NES version is pure cancer.

3: Original famicom version, the DS remake and future releases fucked things up by making bosses attack twice in one turn.

>> No.4998834

>>4998825
All of these are completely true and correct. Personally I prefer PSX FF1 over NES but that's just preference, both are excellent. I like turning off missing when targeting a dead enemy, turning on dash and the double boss HP.

>>4998630
You should play Tactics before you're even allowed to play any third or fourth gen Final Fantasies - although you could probably squeeze some enjoyment out of 4 and 6. You won't really enjoy them until you learn to appreciate mechanics. Did you actually configure everything in 12?

>> No.4998853

>>4998843
I had a friend beat the game and all trials on the ps4 release so I could play the low level challenge. I had played the base game before and it was super uninteresting. At least with the low level challenge mode I found an appreciation for the little mechanics.

>1: Original NES version
yeah except the spells are fucking broken, any FF1 remake would be the better. I only played the original for curiosity sake, but any future replay should be on a remake
>inb4 muh authentic experience
damn bitch you play video games like this?

>> No.5000216

>>4998864
Yeah the spells are broken in the NES version, but IIRC the PS1 version fixes that.

My problem with the GBA remake and beyond, is that it massively buffs the player's strength and everything becomes a joke. In terms of damage and stuff, the numbers are doubled/tripled, but enemy health was not doubled/tripled to compensate.

>> No.5000754

so dispel doesn't work in the NES version of FFII, at least when you use it, but does it work when enemies use it on you?
I know that XFER didn't work on enemies in FF1 but it did work on your party

I have a real soft spot the PSX versions and I don't even mind the load times because the atmosphere is so top notch.

When EB games downsized I snatched up all the used green label squaresoft games for almost nothing.

However the PSP remakes are my absolute favorites. Something about the art direction and music that just keeps me hooked. There are dozens of RPGs I wish they would remaster to a similar standard. The DS remakes are a close second.

Correct. PSX FF best FF
>>5000798
The PSX version also has the bestiary. PSP FF1 is a little too easy for my tastes, but the sprites look great and the added dungeon on top of the GBA version is alright. PSP FF2 is amazing. Dawn of Souls really did wonders in making FF2 playable.

6 is overrated characters. When you really play it you realize character dev is shallow across the board. Ff3 and ff7 did 10x better in terms of characters

Ff4 is underrated. The pacing, story, and character arcs are solid. Just because its le basic rpg ppl shit on

Ff8 is not an rpg. Ff8 is a sandbox for junction and triple triad fuckery. When viewed in this lens, u realize the game is fantastic.

Ff5 is also nothing but a sandbox. Garbage story and music

I'm replaying FF4 (GBA patched one) and I'm stuck, cause I'm playing it on my WiiU through the VBAGX emulator, but the console shuts off at random, so I'm making slow progress. Any idea of why tuis happens? Maybe the rom is bad?

I'm actually replaying the PSP version (because that's all I have in a portable form). I don't really mind the graphics, in fact I think the map tilesets look 100% better than the originals. But the cutscenes definitely don't need to be there. They have bad graphics, and the moon travel one is simply garbage compared to the mode 7 original.

It was pitched as FFVII, but turned down for being too dark. Lots of ideas were pitches for FFVII. Some still became unrelated games, many did not.

If that's the "true" FFVII by your estimation, then technically, Parasite Eve counts too.

Its been so long since the SNES days that most people assume that one means the original famicom Final Fantasy 3 or its 3d remake, not the SNES release of 6.

The game you are about to play is great, but people are thinking of a mediocre game when you say "FF3".

if i wanted to watch a movie, i'd just watch one than playing a game pretending to be one. I love VII and VIII never go into IX it never held my attention for some reason. My goal next month is to start playing through every squaresoft game up to 7th gen. So hopefully I can get to see what I missed out in with IX

Good news for you, there is a whole genre dedicated to infinite random encounters: dungeon crawlers. People who play jrpgs where story, characters and exploration have more weight since the 4th gen must really enjoy playing the same combat 20 times in a row

IX is my favorite of them. To me it felt like a mix of what felt to me like a "classic" ff setting but with the beauty of the newer games. I liked it so much I feel like it encapsulated what I wanted out of Final Fantasy and I never played any of the later ones.

My tastes are odd though.

Speaking of dungeon crawling, I feel that's another strength of FF4. While on the simplistic and easy side, it has the dungeon crawler appeal, where you always are watching your resources (mana, potions), because random encounters hit hard.

Other Final Fantasies, even ones I really like (such as 6 and 7) don't have that aspect going for them.
