It was a shitty gimmick controller - but then again all Nintendo hardware after the SNES has been built on shitty gimmicks to sell their consistently under-powered consoles.

Bullshit.

Bullshit, unless you have really huge hands.

Dude, this isn't a Saturn controller, no matter how hard you try it.

Thankfully I was already old enough to have used my hands frequently before this (12), so my hands were fine. They're also a normal size for my body, so the thumbs didn't collide. I also got used to 4 face buttons when Nintendo released that other controller you hate.

Admit it, Sega was smarter to go with 3/6 face buttons and no worthless Select button than 2/4 face buttons and a Select button.

This, Nintendo has always had it backwards after the SNES.

>The priority of first party, primary controllers
Should be as simple, intuitive and natural as possible without cutting out core features. It should also require as little explanation as possible and ideally feel familiar to people who've played the previous generation's console.
>The priority of secondary optional controllers - first or third party
Basically anything else should be welcomed. This is where it makes sense to think outside the box or specialise to certain niches/functions.

Sony/Sega understood this back then, and Sony/Microsoft understand this today. The only reason Nintendo gets away with it is because their fan base follows the same herd mentality as Apple's. Just like Apple fans they will treat gimmicks as creative genius, and gladly pay extra for functionality that should have been offered in the original product (i.e apple's headphone adaptors, wii and switch's 'pro'/'classic' controllers).

My hands are often soft enough that a stray beard hair can puncture them, and Rocket League with vibration on made my fingers puffy and itchy for several days, and I still never got calluses from PlayStation D-pads.

I like how I never tilt it the wrong direction by accident. It's a good design.

Uh, both the Gamecube and Switch primary controllers are really simple to understand. The N64 controller is blown out of proportion, and even Wiimotes are easy to "get" if you've ever used a TV remote. Sure the latter two are gimmicky, but they're not complicated.

In Apple's defense their walled garden approach to software development for the iPhone has created a much cleaner appstore versus Google's waste land of junk apps and viruses.

I agree with everything you've said about Nintendo though, honestly if you're buying their consoles after the SNES era you are simply not buying the best product on the market. Even SNES is debatable as the best purchase for the time because the Genesis was an excellent product.

>> No.4998453

While I think the n64 controller and gc controller and wii and wii u and switch are all gimmicky, I applaud Nintendo for always doing something new, because Sony has rested on their laurels since 1996.

On topic tho, if the saturn had 2 shoulder buttons on each side and the 6 face buttons and the 3D model was standard instead of that small non analog controller it would be the GOAT controller of all time, bar none.

>> No.4998456

n64 performance was often lower than ps1 because of arbitrary software restrictions for devs though. gamecube was more powerful than ps2 in some areas but certainly not every one. the ps2 was harder to use well though, which adds to the perception of the gamecube's power.

He's not wrong though. Ps2 could have added it and nothing of substance would have changed. Even "dualshock" versions only fucking used the left stick. Unless you count ape escape and even that could have been done better with just one.

Is this bait? Regardless of what people think of the system, the psx's controller is by far the best of its generation. There's a reason it's design has mostly preserved across sony's future consoles

Saying any of Nintendo, Sega, Sony, or Microsoft consoles used the same hardware for two generations is wrong.

Cube and Wii are the closest since Atari 20 years earlier. Even then the system was far superior in all regards because 2001 megahertz is not at all equivalent to 2006. That is like saying the Playstation 5 or X1-two will be using the same hardware because they switched to x86.
